That's not what a contingency plan is. A contingency plan isn't something that you have to complicate things and make sure you can't actually succeed. A contingency plan is drafting a QB NEXT year to groom. Not this year haha. Again, it sends a clear message to Foles that he is not our guy.

Or it sends a message to Foles that he's 30, has never been a solidified starter, has had cushy seasons with a highly competitive overall team, and ultimately still has to prove to any new team he signs with that he is legitimately better for them than drafting a QB. He's over 30 and expensive and decent but not THAT good. He's never been a QB who commands the starting role without competition, I mean shit there's a reason Philly drafted Wentz!

For us to guarantee total long term stability in that role to him, without seeing any results, that's a little shaky if you don't have an understudy with potential. I feel like if you can't get a top 15-20 QB then having competition in the room is the way to go.

Tanking = we trust a player in the draft / a free agent not on our team, more than we trust our current players to fix these problems
Drafting competition = we don't entirely trust the guy we just signed and we want him to compete to keep him honest

I think tanking is actually a worse example of the same distrust lol, because it disrespects talent that has already contributed a lot. Meanwhile, you're about to pay backup QB a lot of money, it's really not that obtuse to want him to prove he's worth 25 mill per season or whatever.

Foles as a FA QB should EXPECT to have to compete cause that's usually what happens when you sign a veteran who was never truly a starter.

Drafting someone 7th overall is not "you're going to compete" it's "you're going to compete this year and you will eventually lose because THIS is our guy"

I’m just gonna close my end of this argument by saying, when you’ve been bad at QB for 20 years, it becomes more and more pressing to make SURE that doesn’t happen again. Having options is better than not.

 

And I'm still where I was before - it's not going to happen and it's a bad idea haha
