Randall and Juice have been tweeting about practicing 1 v 1 against each other. The "John Dorsey lowkey a genius..." is probably just him joking that he's a genius for trading for both of them last offseason.

    This kind of clarifies it...

My Jags first round hopes, ranked. With descriptions why I want that player in parentheses. BPA means, depending how the board fell; they might be the best player available at that time.

Unrealistic Jags picks we should take instantly if anything dumb happens

    1) Quinnen Williams, DT/NT (need/BPA)
    2) Josh Allen, DE (BPA)
    3) Nick Bosa, DE (BPA)

    —————————-

    Realistic, acceptable targets at 7

    4) Devin White, LB (need / BPA)
    5) Jawaan Taylor, OT (BIG need)
    6) Ed Oliver, DT (cost saving / seamless replacement / BPA)
    7) Daniel Jones, QB (long term sustainability at QB)
    8) Clelin Ferrell, DE (BPA / start planning for Campbell to retire)
    9) D.K. Metcalf, WR (need)
    10) Rashan Gary, DT/DE (cost saving / versatility)

Acceptable picks if we trade down:

    11) Montez Sweat, DE (A player id reach for because I’m high on him)
    12) Christian Wilkins, DT (cost saving)
    13) Greedy Williams, CB (cost saving / BPA)
    14) Jonah Williams, OG / OT? (need / BPA)
    15) N’Keal Harry, WR (need)
    16) TJ Hockenson, TE (cost saving / we need weapons + blocking, he boosts both)
    17) Devin Bush, LB (Jack / Bush would compete for & improve the MLB spot, the other would move to OLB)

    Big theme:

I see nothing wrong with making the Jags defense scarier, or extending our window by drafting another stud ahead of time. This is a great defensive class, and even though we are already set on defense for the time being, I kinda don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to keep our physical/ aggressive identity in place in a sustainable way.

Nick Foles buys us time on offense - I’m tryna make sure we have a top defense for the next 6-10 years. Cause then even with an average offense we can be contenders, let alone that gives us time to find our future QB while staying competitive & building continuity

I’m still fine with Daniel Jones however, nothing wrong with planning ahead at the most important position. Even a “multi year deal” to Foles can be made cuttable by year 3, and he’s already 30. So I’m not against double dipping at QB and being protected in case Jones doesn’t pan out, or in case we get more of a STL Foles than a PHI Foles.

Meh. I'm willing to take strong measures at QB. The last decent QB we drafted was David Garrard in 2001, and he even sat behind both Brunell and Leftwich before we realized he was the best guy. Patience and foresight might be the way to go in order to avoid it happening again. It's been so long since we made a good decision at that position and I want to cover our tracks a little bit haha,

Having a long term plan in place is better than hoping Nick Foles can still play behind a much worse line / with worse WRs. There is that chance he's a bad investment - he's better than Bortles ideally but he's also downgrading his offense. And if he does decently well then, you could also argue this might be the last time we draft high enough to pick a QB for awhile.

Okay this is way more text that needs to be said haha. We are not taking a QB in the 1st round if we sign Nick Foles.

I'm not convinced. Both Shad and Dave Caldwell have hinted at double dipping at QB before. Competition is kinda important in case one guy can't get it done consistently. And we've already seen Cody Kessler can't do shit so, we might need a backup QB too.

Besides, if Jones wasn't ready after learning from Cutcliffe and then sitting behind a veteran for 2 years, then we did something really fucking wrong haha. To me that can be a smart way to go.

Foles is leaving Philadelphia to become a long term starter.
The second it was announced he was leaving, it was announced that Jacksonville is going to sign him to a multi-year deal.

It would be a massively stupid move to make and I don't think there's any chance we do it.

Multi-year deal could easily mean a front loaded 4 year deal, where by year 3 most of his guarantees are paid and his dead money is less than the cap savings.

However, even if Foles is doing GREAT? We can trade Jones to a QB needy team just like the Pats dealt Garroppolo.
If Foles is struggling, Jones gives us potential for a higher ceiling. If Jones is struggling and doesn't catch on, he still has value to other teams.

To me either way you get something out of it. Best case scenario Foles does great for 2 years, you cut or trade him at age 33 and eat some dead cap when Jones is ready, Jones is your long term QB. Worst case scenario, we tried 2 QB and they both sucked but damn it at least we tried our hardest to do something about it.

    OR

We could not waste a pick on a player we won't use and won't get a strong enough return on.

This is bad and unrealistic move haha. Not gonna happen.

I think this is actually a good point, but Garroppolo is kind of an anamoly. Being a patriot, back-up to the GOAT, and performing well when called upon drove up his price tag.

You sound like we signed Deshaun Watson when you say we definitely wouldn't use Jones haha. Of course there's a chance that Foles is ineffective. He's only been good in Philly which has been a starkly QB friendly offense since damn Chip Kelly lol. Old Sam Bradford & rookie Carson Wentz did great there too.

I think Foles is one of the best FA options and I'm rooting for him, but I'm not convinced we aren't just as dysfunctional on offense as the Rams were when they signed him.

    EDIT: response to @CarpetElf

True, but he was selected at the bottom of round 2. Jones would hold value just by being a former 1st round QB. And if Jones isn't that good, we could just not ever start him over Foles and keep that quiet. Some desperate team would get curious if they could develop him.

No no, I sound like I'm speaking realistically haha.

Foles - I want to be a franchise guy
    Jaguars IMMEDIATELY - have a multi-year deal

it's pretty simple haha. We think we can win now with Foles. We are not going to spend our top ten pick in one of the best defensive drafts ever on a position we already addressed.

  22. CarpetElf

    douglas Prestigious

There is a 0 percent chance any team would ever trade us a top 7 pick for Daniel Jones. So there's no point at all in doing this part haha.

I addressed this though. Not only is this possible, but this would be the smart way for the Jags to sign him:

  24. CarpetElf

...that isn't actually addressing it though haha. It would be smart to sign him like that yes but drafting a QB at 7th overall sends a VERY clear message that "you are not our guy". Which is not smart haha

It's a contingency plan because Foles, while better than Bortles, is still a below average (or at BEST average) QB we are gonna overpay, who might be very underwhelming if our OL and running game struggles like it did last year.
