Spent the morning trying to workout a complex formula in excel. Probably spent 3 hours on it and the solution was something so simple.

 

This is literally Excel's motto

I was trying to figure out an INDEX MATCH formula with an IF AND formula.

 

IF AND formulas are the worst.

It's nerdy as hell, but VLOOKUP is such a beast and I love it.

VLOOKUP was a game changer early on in my career. I feel like college or high school doesn't really teach applicable excel skills. I felt embarassed going into my first job and someone having to teach me me it.

 

I just recently learned how to use vlookups and pivot tables. Total game changer.

VLOOKUP and then a reverse VLOOKUP to find outliers that lead to solving a big problem >>> sex

 

HLOOKUP is underrated.

Creating named ranges is huge as well.

 

Vlookup rules. Index combined with a match function is another one that comes in clutch

 

A buddy of mine works for a company that had a loose database that was primarily populated with user information by the user themselves. They recently went through a massive data integrity crunch which took FOREVER and he was constantly amazed at how incredible Excel is.

I'm sure anyone who can use the 5 or so formulas mentioned in this thread well could get a great paying job doing that kind of shit exclusively.

 

A lot of the systems I’ve had to work in involve SQL which I’m not very well versed in which is a bummer because if I could get remotely good at that I’d probably be in a better job by now

 

I kill it with SQL move here I'll teach you

 

An old boss/mentor of mine said she learned SQL on the job very quickly and said that knowing me, she could train me in it and I'd be excellent at it in no time.

Idk if that's a direction I want to go though.

I really should take a class. I got basics down of the writing of queries in our database but then shit will trip me up because I put = instead of “like” or something like that
