Bernie’s $27 average contribution is a masterful study in anchoring for a few reasons:

1) I think he’s actually squeezing MORE dollars out of small donors than he normally would get. I have no stats to back this up, but would guess more non-max-donor types are inclined to give a round number like $20 or $25 as a political contribution threshold. $30 or $50 is a whole different bracket, but this messaging gets the $20 folks to round up and be part of the story.

2) The other suggested donation on his page? $3. It’s a reinforcement of his “man of the people”, “we’re all in this together” message, and it actually slips below the likely round minimal threshold of $5. At the same time, every $3 donation is averaging out every $50 donation at (you guessed it) $27. I imagine he doesn’t actually want his mean donation to get too high because it would undercut his message, so he allows himself to lose $2 per small donor to bring the average down.

 

Pshhh he’s still got to claim “mental health” problems and police conspiracy to complete the trifecta. This show isn’t even half over yet.
