like, I don't get it. If you can read the shit he did in that article and say to yourself "nah, this won't affect my listening habits," then you're a bad person. full stop

Does anyone have a link handy to when a similar but less horrific article about him came out like a year ago? I know we discussed it at the time but I’m sure this will dominate searches for him now.

So tell me something awesome Supporter

I just don't get how someone could think that, and then think "I should share this with everyone" and not think at all that that line of thinking might be harmful to someone else. (While also "commending others" who share his line of thinking)

I'm just sad. The world deserves better. Those women and women everywhere deserve better.

Hey cool thing about all this is you can privately listen to shitty people instead of coming into a thread that's meant to talk about the victims and meaningful ways forward to let everyone know you're still gonna listen to the shitty people.

You know what I wish I could listen to? The music of every woman who has been boxed out of the industry by abuse like this!

John // OC now, OH forever.

A small consolation in all of this: Mandy Moore's making nearly $5M per season of This Is Us while Ryan Adams hopefully has people still yell out "play 'Summer of 69'" at him.

I just...this is particularly so frustrating because this is the kind of shit we have been calling out for years and yet I have still logged into this website for years and read people praising this guy and everyone like him! Because it’s “part of who they are” or because “he sucks but his music is good.” There are 7 billion people on this planet you could build an endless catalogue of artists with NO caveats who make INCREDIBLE ART.

Instead, we’re stuck with assholes like this silencing women and destroying lives and passions. We all feel this. We have all had these experiences. Listen when men tell you who they are instead of waiting years for someone else to do all the hard work and you’re able to tweet “fuck this guy!!!”

Abusive men are a rampant problem in the industry and barely if ever held accountable still.

This is some deeply fucked up shit backed up by other accounts of generally shady behavior from a ton of other musicians.

And in this scenario, where the evidence is clear and many voices are backing each other up, in regards to a known problem that is very commonplace, the first reaction of so many is to disbelieve, minimize, distort, ignore, or cover up the reality of the situation.

The truth will never come out as long as there are so many people involved actively working to bury it back up again.

    and for what?

what the fuck are we gaining by continuing to empower abusive people that exploit talented artists and destroy careers to fulfill some sick power fantasy?

So many lives have been destroyed that we'll never hear about, because anyone coming forward is shouted down as a liar and a fake or even just not important, to continue living in the delusion that nothing is wrong and there's no problem to fix.

If your first instinct is to defend these abusers you're the reason we keep having so many fucking abusers.

One of the biggest, most staggering results of generations of the white male supremacy that has been built into our culture is the huge opportunity lost due to oppression. The amount of talented, brilliant people who were put in boxes and crammed into lesser roles instead of nurtured, given time to grow, given space to achieve. Men and women who could have changed the world, even in minor little ways, held back systematically to create more space and opportunity for mediocre white men to flounder and fuck up and get chance after chance to show their lesser worth instead of competing on a level field.

Decades of the system bending over backwards to ensure white male success at the direct opposition of anyone else. Even if it means other people more capable never get a chance to help society for the greater good. Harvard Medical School didn't let women in until the fucking 50's. Think of how much further we'd be as a society if the fragile egos of white men didn't actively and violently hold back millions of people from being all they could, the effects still last and the practices still continue today. The magnitude of this loss is something we'll never truly know.

So it won't end with Ryan Adams, there's hundreds of abusive shitheads like him out there and they'll all have defenders who think its not a big deal. The whole system needs to change and its long over due.

This is mostly tangential, but a little while ago I caught myself thinking about how I rarely ever hear non-men (particularly non-white/straight/etc. men) hailed as musical/creative geniuses, while the term is thrown around pretty liberally for men. Today, I contemplated how many of those men labeled as such are monsters in their private lives; while far from scientific, the correlation seems pretty strong based on just the few examples that readily come to mind.
