  2. hahaha what a review... a brief mention of BTD and Rabbit Hole, and then like 2 paragraphs about Built This Pool and Brohemian, and no mention of any other songs. Great first impressions, fella! hahaha... sheesh

Pretty sure I could do a better job bullshitting my way through that lol that was in no way an indicator that they had actually heard the album.

"Tracks such as "Sober", "Los Angeles", and "No Future" showcase the new songwriting dynamic of Hoppus and Skiba, while "Cynical" and "Rabbit Hole" are throwbacks to the early days of blink 182. Some of the more bland, mid-tempo tracks like "Teenage Satellites" and "Kings of the Weekend" are redeemed by drummer Travis Barker's sporadic drum breaks, adding a whole new level of energy to the songs."

Here's my advanced California review after hearing it from beginning to end:

After the album's enjoyable opener, Cynical, Bored to Death kicks in, which is a blend of blink's catchy sounds with a hint of darker tones. Fans will appreciate the familiar sounds of the album overall, filled with pop punk goodness and the vocals of Matt Skiba and Mark Hoppus. Travis Barker frenetically provides percussion as usual. Rabbit Hole is a straight forward pop punk tune that will likely be a live staple in the Summer months. Home Is Such a Lonely place is a ballad. The album closes on the short song Brohemian Rhapsody, which includes the lyrics "There's something about you/ that I can't quite put my finger in," proving that the band hasn't lost it's sense of humor. John Feldmann was the producer on this album.

Does anyone else actually dislike reviews in general? Like the way people describe music always seems so silly to me. Like "Angular guitars over rapid fire drums" or like "sweeping lush strings" or something lame like that. It's probably a stupid thing to say considering I like discussing opinions with people on here but I don't really care what rating that publications give things if I like them. And I'd never use reviews to justify something being good or bad to someone else.

I think "reviews" when Bored to Death was released were pointless.

A good review can convince me to check something out but in general they're pretty meaningless to me. Like that first listen the other day tried it's hardest to say it's not a blink album while listing off nothing but things that blink has done lol.

Yea, I eat that shit up if I'm hyped for an album and want some insight into what it sounds like. I sort of gloss over the opinions and try to read about what to expect with the songs, so the colorful descriptions are usually annoying in the end, but I'll admit that I embrace it before I can hear the album.

  19. Reviews excite and bother me both at the same time.

On one hand, I love getting a sneak peek to what something may be like because if it's a positive review, it pumps me up even more. But on the other hand, I feel like if I read a review (good or bad) and then I listen to the album, watch the movie, etc., I spend my time thinking of the review and it alters my opinions. That's why I generally avoid forum based websites when an album leaks because I want my opinions to be my own. If a bunch of people are saying, "I hate this song!" then I'm most likely going to go into it thinking I'm going to hate it too.

I did read the first review of California though. I didn't take it too seriously though, and I didn't read TOO into it.

I like hearing in general what the songs are and what they're about, but I don't like people saying "It sounds like (past album/song)" or "The song is just bad". Everyone's feeling's on what "a mix between Untitled and Dude Ranch" varies in what it means to them, so there's no real reason to take that to heart. Also what makes a good blink song stand out from a bad one is not an easy thing to describe either.

Yea. The worst is when you can't unhear something after reading about it online. Someone will complain about the tone of a guitar or the terrible decision on a lyric, and then I'm waiting for it on my first listen. I probably would never notice a lot of the stuff I read in advance if I just dove into the album on my own the first time around.

I'm cool with album reviews to an extent if they're really dissecting it, but song reviews that tell you nothing that are longer than it would take you to listen to the song are meaningless.

  23. Exactly! It drives me crazy when I can't unhear something that was mentioned in a review. It ruins it for me a lot of times. However, I'll read every review possible AFTER I listen to it first because I want to compare thoughts with people.

    I am a haunted house. I'm superstitious.

I thought it was 45 minutes filled with conceptual breathing sounds of Mark, Matt and Travis facing each other inside the same room. Such a letdown.
