I love both, but last year Harakiri For The Sky came out on top for me. Arson was absolutely phenomenal.

On a side note, have you heard of Der Weg Einer Freiheit? They're a German post-black metal band with a more extreme twist - kind of like a heavier Deafheaven. If you enjoy MOL or Harakiri For The Sky you may like them.

Heaven Shall Burn are, without a doubt, one of the greatest metalcore/deathcore/whatever bands of the 00s and beyond. They've always been one of my favourite heavy bands and I don't think they've released anything I've disliked. Shit, they even made me enjoy a Blind Guardian song with their "Valhalla" cover and I loathe power metal.

Damn yes it does. Both of them are awesome. The 2nd one has that amazing Merauder cover on it which is tight.

Just letting you know, if it involves black metal I have probably already heard it lol, I have an unnatural obsession with the genre, yes I have listened to Der Weg, but thank you for thinking of them :)

If you ever need black metal recs let me know, I love talking about it and showing people new shit.

Haha that makes sense mate. And glad to know someone else likes Der Weg because even all my hipster blackgaze loving friends have never come across them.

Alright then, well, could you give me some good old school 90s bands that aren't Mayhem, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Emperor, Dissection or Dark Funeral? I'm pretty well versed in the modern post/depressive BM stuff and I'm a sucker for blackened DM occasionally so I probably have all those covered, just classic stuff is my blindspot.

Or, long shot maybe, but any industrial BM you might know of? I love Anaal Nathrakh and I discovered that Thorns album a little while back so I was wondering if there any others you might know of?

And last thing, I'm assuming you know Dodsrit, yes?

Also interested in some black metal recs. I'm fairly new to black metal n lean more towards the experimental/post-metal sides of things. I'm a huge death, thrash and melodeath fan so I like a lot of different metal just havent ventured deep into black metal. Lemme know what you'd recommend to a n00b!

Dodsrit is a good time, yes I know them lol

I will respond to all of this, and give you a nice list in a few days of 90s BM and bands like Anaal Nathrakh.

But first what era of Anaal Nathrakh do you like? Early, middle, or new? I feel their sound changed over time.

Also what kind of blackened death, do you like? Do you mean like War Metal like Teitanblood and Blasphemy? Or Behemoth-esque? Or Akercocke, Mortuary Drape-esque?

Well Jon seems like the man to go for this but I'm happy to give you a few of mine.

Some mandatory classics you may want to explore are the ones I mentioned above in the classics section. Mayhem and Darkthrone in particular, so check out Des Mysteris Dom Sathanas and Transylvanian Hunger by them respectively.

If you're already a DM fan and I'm guessing you've already checked out Behemoth for sure, try Svart Crown. They're a French blackened DM fan that any Behemoth fan should love.

And as you said, you enjoy the experimental/post side of the genre already, so if you haven't already checked them out, try Dodsrit, Bosse de Nege and Decline of the I. All great bands.

That would be great and please take your time mate, I apologise if I dropped a shit ton on you all at once! Glad you dig Dodsrit haha.

Well I fell in love on In The Constellation Of The Black Widow and went from there. I'm not as familiar with the early stuff as the later but I dug The Codex Necro when I heard it.

Honestly I hate the war metal stuff. Too much like Venom, who I hate, and not enough like Bathory, who I love, to my ears but that's just me. I like the Behemoth leaning stuff and I like Ackercocke a lot - I never checked out Mortuary Drape but now I will!

Thanks I can work with that, you can hold off on Mortuary Drape because I will also put them in the 90s post, they were doing some unique things back then. They have more of an occult feel to them, like OG occult shit.

Swallow the Sun and Hectate Enthroned both came out today. I posted it the other day, but the Mortal Scepter album is a solid offering of thrash.

    ITHACA SUCKS

    jk

I'm not super into straight black metal unless it's a hybrid like black death or especially black thrash. For black/thrash I'd give Hellripper, Black Fast, Condor, Urn, Deathhammer, Destroyer 666, Nocturnal Graves, Ravencult, Rapture, Vulture, Vomitor, and Wombripper a try. I can be more specific if need be.

Blackened death: Dodecahedron, Goatwhore, Grave Upheaval, Infernal Coil (some grind in there), The Ominous Circle, Ulsect, Vahrzaw

Other black metal I enjoy: Aosoth, Chaos Moon, Chapel of Disease, Death Fortress, White Death, Mgla, Zhrine, Deathspell Omega (avant-garde), The Great Old Ones, Hoth (melodic black), Thulcandra (melodic black), Obsequiae (medieval black), Oranssi Pazuzu (psychedelic black), Samael, Sargeist, Sear Bliss, Slaegt (black/trad), Varathron (Hellenic), Wayfarer

Proscriptor is a top tier drummer, you can tell his drumming is able to perfectly border speed, technicality, but still able to keep that simple aggression in thrash.

Also ghost is just blue oyster cult with king diamond makeup.

As far as my metal listening goes, further still by bosse de nage was one of my favorites from last year along with thou, black fast, skeletonwitch, at the gates, sumac, horrendous and lately I've been really into this desecravity album. All time favorites include nile, opeth, isis, negrophagist, the black dahlia murder, hate eternal, beneath the massacre, with passion and kataklysm to name a few. Generally I'm open to whatever sorry if that doesn't narrow down recommendation options. Looking forward to your input thanks man.
