Remember back then if you turned on MTV you were guaranteed to see either Brittany Spears, Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync or blink?

What's My Age Again? was my first exposure to the band so starting up being a new fan in 1999 was perfect as the band was on MTV all the time whether it was TRL or Making The Music Video specials. I really miss those days. Give me a half hour to an hour special about them making a music video over short 30 second IG clips of the recording process any day of the week.

God I loved those. MTV is another funny thing to look at in hindsight. Back then, the "cool" thing to say was, "MTV? They don't even play music anymore!" Fast forward 20 years and now we're talking about how good we had it.

  7. I think, to some degree, that's the mark of a band continuing to stay relevant in the mainstream through the years. Because to do that you have to change if you want to keep getting new fans, and getting new fans is how you continue to be a big band. But, yeah, too processed, too many joke songs, Finn is ruining them, too catchy, not fast enough, too mainstream, sell outs, all of it ...

The other thing I want to point out, is that a lot of things people want the band to do, just really aren't tenable in 2019.

Let's just break down some of them:

The cost to record an album for 9 months? That could easily be in the high 7 figures. And if that album was actually recorded, and it then it actually sounded like Untitled Part 2, there's no way it would ever make back the cost of recording it. There's no way that's selling in massive quantities in 2019.

Like, there are bands that just keep making similar music, doing the same basic venue sized shows, and have a pretty good career. NOFX is basically doing what some people wish Blink would do. But, Blink-182 aren't NOFX. A 'fast' Cameron Webb produced album power-punk album would probably lead to the band not really being a band anymore. No big shows, no big money, no nice buses? I don't really see Travis and Mark doing that. I don't even seen them wanting to be at the level NFG's at right now. Kinda just on the edge of being remembered, mostly for old stuff, having new material that some old fans like, some don't, (sidebar: I'm team last NFG album was one of their best), and they just kinda move forward bust mostly stay in the same place. For the same reason I don't think that's what FOB would ever do, I don't think that's what Blink-182 would ever do either. They have different goals for what kinda band they want to be and what level. And all the those clamoring for a sound from 2006, wouldn't sell the albums, or fill the seats. We know this because we can look at all the bands from that era and see it.

People hated how poppy "What's My Age Again" was. They're gonna hate how poppy some songs on this new album are, I would guess. And the album's probably going to sound like TOYPAJ meets California mixed with some modern sounds. We're probably not gonna be able to hear a whole lot of guitar riffs and solos. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. But I'm most surprised that other people are surprised that a big popular bands wants to keep being big and popular, it just seems to follow their entire career logically.

(And I think the Instagram clip sounds good. I'm totally down for an album that sounds like that. I played the hell out of California all summer, I'd love to have another album to do that with.)

I love NFG and always will and agree their last album was probably my 3rd favorite by them behind self-titled and Sticks and Stones. Especially after the last few albums I was worried they didn't have another good album in them.

I think a lot of it (from a fan's point of view) is to have the humility to recognize that the things you personally want from them might not be the things they want and are not the best things for their career. Change producers, write more complicated songs, spend longer in the studio, change up your set lists, etc. Those are all fine preferences to have, but it doesn't mean that those are wise or realistic business decisions. I can complain all I want that they are writing songs with too many "Na Na"s but those didn't keep them from locking down a damn Vegas residency so...

They "accidentally" put that clip up with music earlier the day after "oh no they're making Chainsmoker songs" oh look a clip that is definitively blink sounding haha

  18. And I even agree with some of them. I have a wish list of producers I'd love to see them work with. (But, I don't think the end product would be a guitar driven rock album that sounds like 2004.) I think there's valid complaints about the end product to be had, I've criticized songs plenty, but "omg they might work with TOP" or "the band is ruined!!" is just ridiculous histrionics.

God I wouldn't even buy the album. Or maybe just not on the release day. Ok, I'd by it on the first day but wouldn't preorder it....maybe.

Obviously its impossible to tell if thats mixed or mastered, but it atleast sounds like a finished song in terms of recording, new music might not be too far away. HYYYYYPEEEE!

I listened to California today for the first time since it probably came out. Still super meh on it, besides a couple of songs and one from the DLX version. I think this is just one that I won't ever get into.

But hey, Dude Ranch to DED was a pretty good run for me to be a fan of most of it. So I'll let it pass and hope the next one is better.

I'll put $20 down that the single is March/April, the album is June, and a summer US Amphitheater tour from July to September. Then they'll do the December holiday concerts, followed by a 2020 European summer tour where they'll headline Reading/Leeds again.
