Huh, I found it sweet and genuinely poignant.

 

Yeah I’m farther in now and some of it is very funny. But, “I have patients.” “Well I’m losing mine,” was an atrocious exchange. There’s also a really unfunny deaf impression but that’s bad on a different level.

 

Got way better after the first 15/20 minutes. Didn’t expect it to be so much of a comedy/drama with some horror tropes thrown in.

 

I thought it was good, not great.

 

Hmm we'll see how this goes.

Does it really need a reboot? Most movies are stand-alone

 

Doesn’t need a reboot or anything else in the series. It’s already been done to death, literally.

 

I need to watch The Babysitter again. I loved that one.

 

The Babysitter was so much fun

 

The concept of Final Destination is great. The first movie freaked me out bad as a kid. I think a reboot could be great if they abandon the previous storylines and get a decent team behind it.

 

I'm always up for seeing teenagers killed in ridiculous ways

 

Hell Fest was fun! Not great, but fun. Set design was cool and the kills we're surprisingly good. Some of the negative reviews I saw definitely seemed to exaggerate how bad it was.

Also had no idea Tony Todd was in it, which was a great surprise.

 

I love Tony Todd. I was a little frustrated during his press interviews for Hell Fest. I think that was right when news dropped that Peele was looking to produce a Candyman reboot. Todd embodied an iconic character, but the way he seemed so entitled to play the character again in the interviews was pretty off putting. He dialed it back in later interviews, stating he’d be happy to just be involved in any way.

 

I hadn't heard about this, so I just looked up a couple of interviews about it. I didn't find any of it too frustrating -- he seems to really respect Peele, and I can't say I necessarily blame him for holding such an iconic role so close -- but maybe I didn't see the right interviews.

 

I love Peele but I also am 100% with Tony Todd on whatever he says about that role. I know we’ve had Freddy without Robert Englund and Pinhead without Doug Bradley and those were bad enough, but there is no Candyman without Tony Todd.

 

I don't even necessarily think he should play the role again but I would love for him to he featured somehow

 

That role is his bread and butter. He should be protective of it, especially in light of how we've seen the other horror icons tarnished in some of the remakes.

 

Also, I don't think it's wrong to credit an actor with the success of a film like that, especially in horror where some movies have leaned on them heavily. Todd made that role what it was, regardless of script and who was in the director's chair. With movies like Halloween, Scream, etc etc it's more so about the story and how everything unfolds. With characters like Candyman, Freddy, Leatherface, and Pinhead, it's all about what they do with the character on screen and how it effects the audience.

I'm pretty surprised Peele doesn't want him involved tbh.

 

Anguish was amazing. Really disorienting and unsettling, and its obscurity meant going in blind/spoiler-free paid off

I've got so many other options that even if they make it without me, which I doubt, the attention the new movie will create will lead folks back to the original [film] because people like to see the source material.“

A copy and paste of the quote from syfy wire. Maybe it’s just my interpretation of it. Doubting they can make the film without him. Saying he would have fought for the film years ago, but now he’s meh about it. He is iconic in the role, like I said. It’s hard to imagine anyone else out there playing the role. But I do believe in Peele and his ability to place a new actor in the role that could make it their own.

 

Maybe it’s because it’s out of context, but I read that quote as using “make it without me” to mean “create it without me” and not “succeed without me”. I could be wrong obviously, but that seems more like he’s come to terms with the fact that they may not involve him but their success would only mean that he gets renewed attention in the original.

 

I agree with both of you in that those roles were tarnished, but I feel like the actors were bad and placed in bad movies that were made as cash grabs by production companies looking toretain the rights. Pinhead is an interesting example because it both illustrates the point and negates it. Last year’s Hellraiser Judgement showed a strong Pinhead performance in a semi decent movie written and directed by someone who had worked in the early films and had a genuine love for the franchise. Now Hellraiser Revelations was just a complete dumpster fire.

 

I see what you mean for sure. I’m probably being overly pessimistic and it’s my interpretation entirely. But when I read the quote, I just can’t shake it.

 

Yeah, this particular example is definitely a rock and a hard place kind of thing. Honestly I just want to rewatch Candyman now.

 

I really like that take he has on it. Always been a fan of Todd, he’s a great actor.

No doubt Peele has the chops to do something great even if he winds up not involved.
