So after much thought about this year's music. This album along with shrine are my top, I couldn't separate the 2, they both have been played endlessly by me and both give me those vibes every time they come on. When I'm singing to the top of my lungs and my whole mood changes I know these 2 are special.

14. Thrice came out swinging from a five-year hiatus with 2016’s To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere, an easy win for fans that had feared they may never hear from the band again. Settling back into the normal record cycle routine, they’ve returned two years later with an album that not only treads the ground paved by its predecessor, but uses the tools found along the way to explore even further. This growth is evident the moment Palms kicks off, as the arpeggiated synth notes of “Only Us” show up like fervent knocks on a door, insisting to be let in. Dustin Kensrue wastes no time getting into the meat of the album’s theme, bellowing in the song’s chorus: “Finally when will it be enough/to find there is no them/There is only us”. A revered singer in the alternative music scene for nearing two decades now, Kensrue has never been known to tackle songwriting without a passionate motive and something to say. With Palms, though, we hear him finding his place within the polarizing nature of world issues, opening his mind, and reexamining a restrained ideology. And while the past few years have made it especially nice to hear a straight-up call-to-arms type of song like “The Dark”, or its more aggressive sister song “Hold Up A Light”, it’s refreshing to hear Kensrue assess the way he attempts to mold his understanding of the world around him, rather than just digging his heels in. Meanwhile, Teppei Teranishi continues to impress by laying out riff after hypnotic riff, as the brothers Breckenridge unleash perhaps their most consistently stellar rhythm section performance to date. “Just Breathe” offers a vantage point of these qualities, as a blistering bass riff and tricky pull-off guitar lead pull the listener through verses that explode into dissonant choruses with a completely different time signature. It’s hard to make songs with this dynamic groove in such a satisfying way, but Palms has no issue demonstrating for us time and time again that Thrice is absolutely still capable of firing on all cylinders. I wish I could understand the affinity for The 1975. (This is not a slight towards their fans/you.)

 

You listen to their new album front to back? I had a similar feeling until this record, which has actually made me go back through their catalog and I dig most of it.

 

Apparently there's a new mix / radio edit of Hold Up A Light out there.

This isn't a good sign. Means we're stuck with this song in setlists for years to come, which will only increase the frat bro crowds

 

Song is great, it sounds great live and I don't know how one song will attract a whole new crowd of people that aren't already into the band...

Welcome Home literally ushered in so many people at Coheed shows that just come to hear that song

They’re my favorite band but my god if I could go to a show and not hear Welcome Home it would be a miracle

 

I mean, all I can say other than I don't know what you are talking about is if "frat bros" like both them and Thrice, then they just have good taste in music ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

I don’t even like Bud Light. Or beer for that matter.

I want to see a Super Bowl commercial for Bud Light featuring Thrice though. They need to just embrace it.

 

You're completely missing the point. When "Welcome Home" got added to guitar hero, rock band or whatever it was on the frat bros starting coming in droves JUST to see that song live. They didn't become fans of the band, they became fans of the song, and now you can't go to a Coheed show without frat bros yelling for "Welcome Home" the whole set

 

I can't wait to hear the Palms b-side "Dilly Dilly!"

 

Yes I just love getting punched in the back to one song when I see my favorite band live because the frat bros have been waiting to hear one song

 

Hold Up A Light still sucks too anyways

If that is true, then Thrice already has this with Deadbolt. Adding more songs for them to yell out live just gives them more variety

I got into Coheed with Welcome Home too though. Such a great song and band.

 

That'd be a pretty successful tour I think. I could see each of their fans digging the other.
