yep to both. i want to explore every little corner but there's virtually nothing worth finding. this is probably my favorite looking jrpg ever - i'm a sucker for the toriyama art and the series has never looked more vibrant, varied or better, but there's just no reason to explore. music is awful, not only are there so few individual tracks but what is there is on like a 20 second loop. DQXI and the CBB best ofs were a match made in heaven the past couple weeks.

Don't not get an amazing game because of a mediocre, not bad, soundtrack. It's the lack of variety, not the quality that gets me and honesty I'm doing so much fighting and going from place to place that I don't even notice the music.

It won’t have either of the 3DS art styles. From what I understand it’s basically the PS4 version but probably less pretty.

True, true, but that was in development hell so there was a ready-to-go narrative there

10/10 was hyperbole. I just feel like people cut them a lot more slack for their nonsense design decisions than they would another studio, because they have been dazzled into believing that their particular brand of bad gameplay is there for a reason. That’s all.

I meant people as in a substantial amount of tastemakers and players, enough for it to dominate the narrative.

Bethesda also was in this position, until they weren’t, but of course they release more games.

I did hours of research on shadow of the colossus last night before buying it, very few people, if anyone, “excuses” the poor controls or said they were purposefully done, so I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about

feels weird to do this with Team Ico. they have exactly 1 game thats a household name. and its legitimately great.

and it came out 14 years ago. things changed in the industry a whole lot since then. of course its going to be dated.

They didn't get all tens, but Ico got 13 perfect scores with a Metacritic of 90 and SOTC got 9 perfect scores with a Metacritic of 91. So I do understand why people were really expecting them to release another "masterpiece" or what-have-you, but it's understandable why people were concerned about TLG.

(Just for clarity, the SOTC is based on the PS2 reviews, not the PS4 version.)

Okay fine I did my research after I had already purchased it but still everyone basically said yeah the controls still aren’t great and can take some getting used to but everything else outweighs it. That seems fair to me and a sentiment that’s given to thousands of other games as well

Also I think it's just strong, vocal fans (some who happen to be reviewers or games journalists) and hype that makes people think Team Ico has this giant amount of prestige when in all honesty they are not held to the same caliber as most studios with great and longer legacies.

Ico was an art game that came out in 2001. From a tiny studio and published by Sony. Game design and game journalism have changed stratospheres since then and it was an outlier to begin with eschewing AAA design of the time. Lets remember how archaic games from 2001 were by todays standards.

Well, yeah, that’s what I mean. Of course the average gamer probably doesn’t buy or even know about those games.

  26. Shadow of the Colossus does have janky controls, but you have to remember that it’s a PS2 game. It’s unbelievable what they were able to do with that hardware. There weren’t open world games as we know them back then at all, and the scale of the colossi was totally unprecedented.

I can see how its impact has diminished in the past decade or so with all of the open world games that have pushed the bar higher, not to mention the games-as-art movement with Journey and what not, but it’s still one of the craziest achievements the industry has ever seen.

I literally hear bad gameplay apologists on every podcast I ever heard whenever one of their games comes up, including the newest games and the rerelease. It’s usually maybe a third of the people on the mic, which granted isn’t the majority, but it’s remarkable compared to other “series” (which it isn’t obviously but you know what I mean). Of course this is anecdotal so take it or leave it.

I agree partly but the new game also has janky gameplay and plenty of PS2/GCN games don’t have janky gameplay/controls. Wind Waker, for example, still feels perfect. Technically though it was a tremendous achievement.
