If I could just forget it

Most people think the AR stands for "assault rifle", so this isn't surprising.

  2. Is it though? It seems the media is always in a race to report something before their competitors do, resulting in incorrect or missing facts

eh, I'd ban handguns long before rifles.

I mean, what does one think is going to happen when you mix easy access with a violently individualistic society, in which competitive economic interaction is seen as a war of all again all, whilst having a history of being carved up along various lines that signify various degrees of hyper-exploitation and objectification, as well as endowing privilege on others, where the superstructure is a composite of archetypes that invariably lead back to the figure of the lone (white) man staking his claim on everything he surveys?

Right, which is why handguns have a more stringent purchasing process.

Pretty sure the reasoning behind semi auto rifles being targeted is due to capacity of the magazine and range over handguns, which makes sense. For these reasons, the licensing process should be similar to handguns nationwide, then again these are used for hunting, where handguns are not.

I guess if it's a hunting weapon the process is easier, if it's for personal protection it's more difficult, which also makes sense.

The AR-15 is the "assault rifle the military uses", which is wrong on so many levels. The AR-15 is a civilian allowed variant of the military M16 which was developed in the 60's. I don't know all of the differences between the two, but the M16 allows for 3-round bursts (full auto for 3 rounds), where the AR-15 is semi auto (pull the trigger every time until empty).

Pretty sure the media is using the AR-15 only because it's more recognizable of a name (plus people will think AR stands for Assault Rifle); the general public won't know what a Sig is.

    Here's a question?

If the public is stripped of their guns; best case scenario all semi autos are taken and only a few handguns remain, will the police armory be "thinned out"?

I mean, the police are armed in such a way to combat someone with equal firepower. Some constitutionals(-ists?) are worried that if guns are taken away, the police will take advantage of the public because we're no longer armed.

In the US, I don't see the police having any weapons taken away.

post-9/11 the police force grossly outclass any possible threat from a civilian. they are essentially armed the way active military would be.

But if there were no guns around, wouldn't the immediate threat be diminished?

  10. It's a separate issue. Because of the 2nd amendment - which only existed because of the scenario you've brought up, for people to defend themselves from their government via standing militias - I don't think guns will ever be completely outlawed. That isn't even what most gun control advocates are asking for. But demilitarizing the police is a separate issue that absolutely needs to be addressed. Since that's a government entity, however, there's no way it's a two-birds-one-stone kind of issue.

I know, but it's still being widely reported as an AR-15, days later. You'd think outlets would at least correct themselves going forward.

There is no way in hell the police would ever be demilitarized either, especially if the general public can go about owning guns the way we do.

Who knows, this will never go away, discussing it seems pointless.

I have an idea. Prepare to have your mind blown. Conservatives want more extensive background checks and tighter immigration. Liberals want stricter gun control policies.

    We can do both.

Obama on his refusal to use "Radical Islam"

one of the more powerful speeches I've heard from him and exactly the kind of message I want from the leader of my country at a time like this

Obama does practice Islam, right? I thought that was a "thing". I'm not being facetious either.

Alright, I remember a lot of Islamic talk when he came into office and how he swore in using a Qur'an.

wait did you legitimately think he swore in using a Qur'an? And are you a right wing conspiracy junkie or just someone who doesn't follow the news super closely?

cause if that isn't proof of how how bad the level of misinformation is in this country...

I'm not joking or trying to start anything.

I never followed politics what so ever, I still don't for the most part, but these were things that I heard people saying...I never looked into it because I didn't care.

I had a 3 year old and another on the way when Obama was coming into office in 2008, I was also just getting my career started so I didn't focus on anything other than providing for my family. So hearing these things I thought "oh that's interesting", and that's all.

yeah like that is what I figured. hence my whole "how bad the level of misinformation is in this country". Doesn't sound like you even care if Obama is Muslim or not, but the mere fact that you heard it and believed it means there are probably hundreds of thousands of others out there who have done the same.
