I don't listen to Neighborhoods a ton, but it's a go to album in the fall for me for some reason. Be interested to see if I still like it then as much after California comes out. Just sound wise. This album seems like a summer album so that itself shouldn't have any bearing.

 

This is Home is the definition of half assed.

 

yeah, it stopped working for me too for a few seconds but then popped back up and worked again.

 

I feel the same way about Kaleidoscope. The break in that song makes me cringe everytime

Except when Travis does the little break outro. That part is pretty sick

 

Aw, I love Kaleidoscope

 

The bridge is nothing, just like 95% of the bridges on that album but Kaleidoscope is easily my favorite on there.

 

That listening party was fun. I wanna do another one today Haha.

I'd already put both California records up there with After Midnight. Neighborhoods really was a disappointment. I still try and appreciate it but I just can't get too into it.

On July 1st we should do an all day listening party where we just put the album on repeat and people come and go.

 

I spun Neighborhoods on a drive awhile back and just do not enjoy most of that record. Way too Tom-heavy and it indulges some of his worst habits. While he was never a particularly good lyricist, I at least enjoyed and found an appeal in his style pre-hiatus, even (maybe especially) in songs like "I Miss You" where his syntax is weird and he got into abstract or strange imagery. Now it's all generic, vague, inspirational or uplifting stuff that doesn't hit at all. From what I remember his songs dominate the record and almost all of them are bland or bad. Not that most of Mark's songs or their shared songs are much better, I don't have high or strong opinions of "Up All Night" or "MH 128912983798" or whatever.

I do like "After Midnight" a lot, maybe just as much or more than "Bored to Death", those two songs are the band's post-reunion high points for me. The only other real standout on that record to me is "Fighting the Gravity", which even if I don't think works that well, is at least a really interesting moment of a real push the band took towards something different or exploratory, and I'll always appreciate that even if it doesn't work 100%. The rest of the record is pretty bland/runs together, but "After Midnight" and "Fighting the Gravity" are the clear standouts to me.

That record has really weird sequencing, too. "Fighting the Gravity" is this dark, weird, indulgent song that immediately goes to "Even if She Falls", a throwback standard pop punk song. It's really jarring.

 

Yeah I think After Midnight and Kaleidoscope are the only ones that could squeeze into blink listening for me right now. I could very well end up liking everything on California more than Neighborhoods. And part of that is definitely production. They just don't sound good next to their discography. So glad they went with a producer.
