The new QBs always set the market. Being 5th highest paid the year you got signed is actually not that bad because there’s probably only 3 or 4 other QB that got signed at the same time, for more money.

Okay but you don't sign someone to a deal like they're the best QB in the NFL and wait for them to prove it. I'm sorry, that's just not how that should work. If that's the way it's headed then so be it. I'm not going to pretend that's intelligent though to say "you've played ten games in three seasons, two of which ended in injury? Yeah, that deserves a top five contract"

He had one ACL tear. You know who else? Deshaun and Wentz who have still been solid this year.

Literally Kirk Cousins and Alex Smith cost more than Jimmy G with about TRIPLE the guaranteed money, and he might be better than both. He’s the best deal out of the 3 QB who got signed lol

It’s a bigger risk to try to win without a QB or find a new one, than it is to just pay a guy who has shown you he understands the position

Alex Smith's career is over and also makes less than Jimmy G. And the best deal out of three terrible deals is still a terrible deal. Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, and Kirk Cousins are the only QBs making more than him. Rodgers and Ryan have earned that. Absolutely no issues whatsoever there. Cousins is also a silly deal but he's at least more established.

As for the ridiculous claim that seven more QBs are going to get more than Jimmy G in the next two years - that's not going to happen.

 

Never thought I’d be saying this, but with Cam Newton ailing and Ben declining / getting slow, Josh Allen is probably the hardest QB to tackle now haha

Except it doesn't. You've got mostly retirees coming up in the next two years. Brees re-signed a contract, could've gotten anything he wanted, and signed for less than Carr and Stafford. Brees, Ben, Rivers, Eli, and Brady are all probably going to retire, if not take a one MAYBE two year deal like Brees. Wilson will get his for sure. That's one. Outside of that you've got probably Goff and Wentz and maaaaybe Dak.

I'm literally looking at it right now. Alex Smith's AAV is 23.5. Jimmy's is 27.5.

 

AAV is a meaningless number

 

Jimmy G has a higher base salary than Alex Smith every year and has a higher cap hit every year except one, where he's $400,000 less than Smith. And that's assuming his career isn't over.
