And their sets have been almost identical per recent tours, especially with 3,000 guitar tunings to prepare for ahead of time as well as all the other responsibilities their crew is tasked with including sound mixing. There's a reason why they don't take requests from the crowd or make drastic changes from show to show.

If a song like 'Treading Paper' isn't getting the response they hoped for (like 'Cataracts' last year), then they'll make a change to something like 'Stay With Me.' So, it's strange that they switched back when the change to 'Stay With Me' seemed permanent a la 'Yellow Belly' taking the place of 'Anthology.'

I think it is pretty obvious they have 22ish songs that they are willing to play on this tour and they play around with which 20 to play on any given night.

I don't think there is anything "weird" about it. Anthology could easily pop back up if they are in the mood.

And if "Anthology" recurs, then your point is valid. Until then, I have to believe that the reaction to "Stay With Me" wasn't enough to keep it over "Treading Paper." So far, the switch from 'Anthology' to 'Yellow Belly' has stuck.

And I previously complained that 'Anthology' brought up too many sad memories of their farewell tour and that it didn't jive with the band's revival/comeback since it sounds swan song-y. Others agreed.

The very next show it was replaced by 'Yellow Belly.' Thus, I sarcastically referred to us (or WE) as being the reason for the change. Since you didn't catch my drift the first time, I hope this explanation serves you well.

I am just not sure what makes you think "crowd reaction" had anything to do with the switch? There is literally no evidence to support that assumption. All we know is that they are willing to juggle between: Daedelus, Treading Paper, Stay With Me, Anthology, and Yellow Belly. On any given night, 3 of those 5 will be played.

But more to the point, if Thrice were playing songs based on the "reaction" they would get, their setlist would include Deadbolt 20 times. At the very least, they would play it once.

Besides, all we have here is an hilariously small sample size of 8 shows. Trying to uncover the motivations in a pattern that small is bound to be fruitless.

Because Riley has specifically said that they'll switch songs out (to minimal degrees) if the crowd reaction is overwhelming flat to a song they haven't played much. They experimented with "Cataracts" last year and they pulled it immediately. (I actually enjoyed hearing it live.)

And Thrice won't be playing "Deadbolt" on this tour; they've made that apparent. Again, if the reaction is overwhelmingly flat, they'll pull something, especially if it's a song they haven't played all that often. That doesn't mean they'll grant requests if there's an overwhelming number of requests to play a song such as "Deadbolt."

There are too many moving parts in their sets nowadays to adjust on the fly.

And I've been watching this band live since 1999. Perhaps I might know something about their tendencies? So, I'd be nice if you took the butcher's word for a change.

    You don't say?

You should probably mention that fact around here more often.

But thankfully this site provides a respite for me, and I think I will avail myself of it now.

But you're just speculating. So is @scottlechowicz. It's ok, you can both have different opinions on what you think Thrice is doing/will do and why, and Thrice will just do their thing, rock all of our faces off, and we'll love them for it.

I mean, isn't that why we're all here?

Back to the actual album, I played this thing pretty much non-stop this weekend: going for a run, walking the dog, taking a shower, making dinner, and I've come to love every single song on here. The only time I switched was to put on Vheissu after a line from "The Long Defeat" – "So keep holding on to hope without assurance" – made "Hold Fast Hope" pop into my head.

I always just figured they'd switch up their set a bit depending on how they were feeling on a given day. I don't care enough to determine, or assume, why.

Clearly they monitor this thread and will adjust accordingly.. Hence why they will play deadbolt at their next show

Just imagine that crowd reaction! ;-)

I was looking up Dustin's twitter yesterday trying to see if he commented on the Orlando shooting. What I discovered was Dustin interacting with a dude who was super bummed out that the new record had political themes. He stated his preference for keeping politics and art separate.

I had a few thoughts on this while reading the exchange: 1) why in the world Dustin felt the need to engage this guy haha he must have been really bored, 2) has this guy never listened to a Thrice record before? There are plenty of songs dealing with "politics" on previous records, and 3) I wish I could see what this dude enjoys in life musically, at the movies, etc if he doesn't like mixing politics with his art.

And also, being in a band in the age of twitter must be really annoying at times. I mean, I had to leave twitter because of dumb things I would see being posted. I can't imagine the types of things someone like Dustin must get from fans on a daily basis.

Thrice has always switched up a few songs throughout their tours. For instance on their farewell tour they would play Firebreather and Redsky some nights and would switch it out for Messenger and Broken Lungs. On their tour supporting Rise Against they switched out songs from Illusion of Safety and St Louis got Betrayal is a Symptom when other city's got Awake and Avenge and Deadbolt. It's not all that strange.

Those two would go really well back to back live, esp since Long Defeat has the slow outro and Hold Fast just kicks right into it. Probably my favorite opener from them was when they were touring Air/Earth and they did the Lion and the Wolf open and went right into Hold Fast Hope.

Interesting thought, I just listened to the studio version back to back and I could definitely see that working. I also think "Hurricane" into "Of Dust and Nations" would work quite well.

The increased use of baritone guitars has completely changed how they construct their set lists and make these decisions. What they did 8 years ago has no relevance today. Riley (and Dustin to a lesser extent) has detailed this in podcasts and articles prior to the release of TBEItBN.

It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to cite sources since 17 years of fandom (in their hometown) and relaying their own information is taken to task.

Again, sometimes you gotta take the butcher's word for it.

Yellow Belly and Anthology were a natural switch since they both require the same guitars and tunings. Until they switch back to Anthology, my point still stands. Their sets are more consistent than ever before due to a laundry list of reasons the band has provided.

If a song isn't working, they'll swap it out with a song that doesn't upset the system in place as far as tunings, sound etc. Cataracts didn't work last year so it was replaced.

Treading Paper was replaced by Stay With Me this tour as was Anthology with Yellow Belly. So far, they've only returned to Treading Paper once. If they revert BACK to Stay With Me, then that proves they're willing to rotate.

So far, Yellow Belly has remained in place since the switch from Anthology while Stay With Me got 2 shows before going back to Treading Paper. Either they didn't like the response to Stay With Me or they're rotating it with Treading Paper.

It's strange that they'd play SWM two nights in a row only to revert back to Treading Paper (if it was truly a rotation) but we'll find out soon enough.

They go all over the place on both live releases, which if you look up setlists for both tours they switched out songs every night. I don't care if the thrice expert butcher wants to dive too much into switching one song out, it doesn't mean anything to anyone else. An educated guess is still a guess.

I've stepped away from this record for a few days. Instead, I've been jumping from record to record, just enjoying Thrice's whole output.

The two I am listening to the most at the moment are Identity Crisis and Alchemy 1 & 2.

That's weird. I guess since I have it downloaded, I'm still able to listen to it. Can't imagine why it was taken off though.
