It’s a real treat to see cardinals fans talking about losing World Series while I’m just over here still sad about the tigers literally giving away a word series to the cardinals in 06.

 

Did you read the whole letter? He complains of being bullied and hints that he thinks the movement is inherently wrong and anti-semitic while being too much of a coward to actually expand on those ideas. I don't think the cultural boycott is the most important thing but he says part of the reason he played there is "as a principled stand against those who wish to bully, shame and silence musicians." That's not having a political opinion or being principled, its just petty vindictiveness.

He then, cowardly, hedges and says he sometimes wonders if he did the right thing - when he clearly doesn't, because if he did, he wouldn't have called the boycott cowardly, shameful, antisemitic, or strategically wrong in much more certain and concrete terms than this hedge.

He also calls Israel a democracy (laughable), and implies that if everyone played in Israel and said mean things about their government, things would get better. Well, maybe, but there's no evidence of that, whereas in South Africa, the cultural boycott worked. It was one of the most important aspects of the boycott. You can go play for cheering crowds and say "Netanyahu is bad!" on stage. See how many people give a shit. They won't care nearly as much as the fact that you are there, playing for them, taking their money, violating a boycott asked for by the people their government is murdering.
