I don't remember people being high on Fire when the ep's first came out.

Vheissu has better fire-songs than FIRE.

TBEItBN has better fire-songs than FIRE.

Beggars has better air-songs than AIR (overall).

We knew Thrice could do acoustic songs rather well based on their singles, bonus exclusives, live performances and that Apple Store split with Thursday as well as Dustin's first solo record which preceded EARTH.

Thus, WATER still stands on its own for being unique and unprecedented as far as the rest of their sound.

So...what about Earth? If anything stands alone in the Thrice discography, it's that one.

To that point, both WATER and EARTH stand apart from the rest of their work. So, if you put one versus the other, WATER is far superior to EARTH.

Dustin has written better earth-songs on PLEASE COME HOME.

There isn't another song like the messenger on their discography

I'll take a lot of songs on Fire over a lot of songs on Vheissu and the new one tbh.

Don't let the programmed drums deceive you. They've written plenty of Messenger-like songs. The Abolition of Man is its blood-relative. The programmed drums are cool, don't get me wrong, but at its core, it's familiar territory.

With WATER, they transitioned to yet another genre and crushed it. Bands IN that genre can't write water-songs as well as they did on their first try.

FIRE was a cakewalk as that was their bread-and-butter at the time. I love it too, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't as surprising as WATER.

We expected kick-ass fire-songs from Thrice. We didn't know what to expect from their water-songs.

So because you expected heavy songs to be on Fire, you can't appreciate it like you do the others? @Mike J

My point was that Water doesn't stand alone as the only thing they've done that is different from the typical Thrice sound. Not that Earth was better or even equal to Water, because it's not.

I'd actually argue that Earth ventures further away from the typical Thrice sound than Water does.

Yeah I'd agree that Earth is really different from everything else they've done.

I don't think care about the drums it's the guitar parts that make it unique to me, love how they pinch out those minor seconds over the driving 3/4

WATER is still more creative (and challenging) than EARTH as Dustin had been writing folk songs for a while (beyond what you heard on PCH). And per the original question, WATER is still the best of the 4 EPs (in hindsight) per the reasons mentioned above.

They'd been dabbling in odd time signatures for a while at that point. FIRE was in their wheelhouse; WATER was not. We all have our favorites, subjectively, but objectively, it's hard to argue against a band stepping completely out of their comfort zone (FIRE) and delivering something unprecedented like WATER.

If only they'd done the live version on the EP, then this statement could be close to true.

What? This album is soft as shit. What a strange thing to say.

Anyway it has to be Fire. Every Ep has its amazing songs but Firebreather, Messenger, BURN THE FLEET, and Arsenist are all on one disc so I don't see how there's an argument ☺

I mean, I never asked a question, and I literally ranked Water as the best EP like an hour ago in this thread. I never questioned how good it was.

yeah I can't name one song on TBEITBN that would work better on Fire than any of the tracks that are already on there.
