Do you genuinely believe that I'm trying to defend Bin Laden? Of course what he did was an atrocity, and I can understand that people would happy about him dying. But that doesn't change the fact that he was a human being, who I have to assume at some point had the capacity for peacemaking. To me, that makes his actions and his death that much more tragic, just the fact that it may have been avoided. I also acknowledge that our own government is largely responsible for radicalizing people like Bin Laden, and I have a huge problem with American militarism.

 

The point is why is your priority to scold us when the worst you've said about the war criminal is that he did some bad things?

 

What was George Bush’s excuse for killing all those people?

 

I will admit that my tone has been off-putting. But how many times do I have to state that I am in no way defending Bush? That isn't what this argument is about. I'm done here. I apologize for not having the exact same opinion as everyone else in this forum. I swear, this place can be more toxic than Reddit sometimes.

Ehhh...I’m in the ‘not gonna outwardly celebrate but not gonna condemn those who do’ camp, so I was keeping quiet...but comparing Reddit, whose toxicity revolves around enflaming racism, sexism, etc to a place that simply angerly argues against folks telling them why they’re wrong to chastise those for celebrating the death of someone who did a lot of bad things is...not a very good comparison.

Obviously it’s an Internet forum so people are going to be snarky and angry as they argue, but I don’t think that makes all forums equally toxic. Ya know?

This is a great example of someone reacting to legitimate, rational criticism of their points with defensive irrational insults. Your whole argument fell apart so quickly (because it was bad), and instead of stating your concept in a better way or hearing why people were criticizing you, you just bailed. Real pathetic dude.

 

Probably a lot more, because your posts are defending the person you say you're not defending. In various ways. It may not be your intent, but it is still the outcome. The entire argument, which started with you calling people "sick," was built around a defense of the dead.

Comparing people not upset Bush is dead to the toxicity of Reddit is quite a leap. And, again, maybe not your original intent ... but when you continue to insult everyone here ... multiple times ... that is a version of defending the very people you say you're not defending.

 

I would also like to add that enforcing this decorum edict when a person like Bush dies has consequences.

Maybe if more people celebrated the deaths of war criminals, even when those war criminals were US Presidents, there wouldn’t be as many US Presidents committing war crimes.

This tone policing is just one of the innumerable protections our society sets up to enable despicable behavior from our elected leaders.

 

Okay, everyone, I apologize. We have obvious ideological differences, however my arguments were not clearly stated, and my tone was inappropriate. I will try to do better in the future.

I think some of the not wanting to speak ill of the dead thing is because we're fearful that people will treat us in the same way after we're gone. But y'know if you're not a huge war criminal, responsible for an aids epidemic, murderer of civilians etc, you're probably good.

Did Bush make a net positive contribution to humanity? Or did he actively make life worse for a significant number of people?
