Eh, it was a takedown of a band that didn't necessarily need one. Anyone reading Pitchfork either doesn't care or already hates that band, they don't need the press. It was a hit job, as humorous as many people found it to be. It was definitely the type of review that Matt was just speaking down upon

I disagree. It was valid criticism that spoke directly to the contradiction at the heart of the band’s sound without just calling them a “Zeppelin ripoff” and used it as an example of a larger trend within the industry. It was as close to a thinkpiece as you get on that site.

Compare that to the 1975 debut review, which is just “lol this band has recorded this sex song before under a different name and the rest is trash, they have nothing to say” when the album clearly had a defining mood, lyrical persona, structure, and aesthetic.

Well of course! But to be the biggest band in the world you have to win over the general populace too.

No, he didn’t write that review. Actually, he loves this band. A screenshot from “The Sound” is his Twitter avatar.

I didn't even find this band until about 2-3 years ago. My friend had "chocolate" playing in the car one day and I was like "this song is really good" and she told me who they were, but I think it took me a year to actually look into them. Now I can't get enough.

Yeah I don't think that in the slightest. After the first show, the next was packed to the rafters. Was amazed at the speed at which these guys took off. Just seemed to be a steady climb with every show.

"Greta Van Fleet sound like they did weed exactly once, called the cops, and tried to record a Led Zeppelin album before they arrested themselves. "

That's the opening line of the review. Get the fuck outta here

  15. all I ever wanted was for my friends to see this band the way I did, like I remember the first time I heard the s/t I immediately was like, "my friends have to hear this." I took them on a drive right then and played the record and I remember being like "do you hear this???!" and "WOULD YOU LISTEN TO THAT SAX!" all i ever wanted was to share this band because I think they make ecstatic, incredible sounds and I think they speak so incisively to our generation. idk, all the positive criticism just means that more people will get to connect with this band and that's so cool to me.

I just read the S/T review. It's harsh, sure, but valid and I think touches on a lot of the feelings I had revisiting it. It doesn't really stand out compared to a lot of the music being made during that time. Some songs shine brighter than others, but yeah. I'd call it mediocre, especially compared to the work that we've seen them produce since.

No, no one deserves criticism for disliking previous work but praising better, more coherent art. That's silly. This band's fanbase being so rabid (and, frankly, kind've annoying) is what took me a bit to get into them. Let's not turn this thread into some weird pissing contest about liking their earlier stuff. The album deserves better than that.

Haven’t heard anything outside the singles but can tell this is a huge step up. I really liked the last one and the S/T is just meh for me. Agreed with above, there isn’t revisionist history for me just because this record is probably fantastic. They’ve built up to something like this, no shame in that.

  19. I love the S/T so so much but I do think that they've only heightened the aspects of their music that make them so special since then. I understand why people would slowly change their tune

Their S/T remains my favorite thing they’ve ever released. But I have held off on the leak, and this could over take it.

The debut definitely stands out among other music of the time and holds up well today, what's going on here

Also, the album's out tomorrow and the lps still in Detorit. Gah.

This band and the reactions fans have remind me a bit of how I view Frank Ocean and viewed Kendrick. Overwhelming hype over albums that I felt did not match the potential an artist had (Channel Orange and GKMC, respectively). I pushed back on both of them being called stone cold classics and people were really, really angry about it. Then the artists released much better works, IMO. I kinda see that here.

The S/T album is okay. There are some really good songs on it, but I never really bought into the hype. ILIWYS was a tremendous step up, but I wasn't ready to call them the band of the generation or whatever. This album is their first that I feel matches the hype and potential that the band has. It's their TPAB, I guess. Bad comparison

ILIWYS is the only album i can say tangibly saved my life, like i would not be alive today if i didnt hear that album. not a doubt in my mind, not hyperbole or exaggeration. for that reason yeah, its the best album of my lifetime

I vibe with this so much. I tend to go overboard and obsess over music by my favourite bands - I'm amazed I have friends at all. But when they feel the same way about certain albums, it's so ridiculously exciting to me.

In regards to reviews though? I think it's nice to read reviews, and if I particularly like something then it's cool to see it getting the recognition it deserves, but they have next to no bearing on my enjoyment on albums, films or videogames. Too much emphasis is being placed on the importance of somebody else's opinion. If you're into that, great - I've read insightful pieces about bands/films that, in fairness, have on the odd occasion helped shape my own opinions - but for the most part I avoid them altogether. Unless it's bad reviews of Fallout 76. Because those are just great reading.
