I figured he meant giving a sign as in “the coast is clear so you can come over now” as opposed to them waiting by the door for him to get back. I don’t think there’s any implication that the other person wants more. Sometimes I like to cuddle and have intimacy after sex with someone even if I don’t plan on seeing them again. And he’s saying he’s sad and doesn’t want that kind of intimacy afterwards.

I’m not saying people have to like the song, but we don’t have to look at it through the dirtiest glasses.

The 1975 wrench magnificence from crisis on their stunning new album

"How do we make art in a world that we can hardly bear to live in? How can we bring ourselves to create at a time when every personal concern seems futile in the face of humanity’s seemingly irreversible endtime? Maybe the answer lies not in art of counteracting beauty, but art that fully leans in to the horror."

Matty sounds pretty incredible in "I Couldn't Be More In Love"

This album also has so many great background singer moments.

This is 100% how I took the song. After reading the lyrics, it feels even more like this. Not to say that Matty isn't capable of being shitty - it just reads more like it's about infidelity, cheating, hookup culture etc.

Personally, I think it’s more likely he’s talking about calling a sex worker than it is that he’s talking about an encounter with a random fan. Especially since there are some similarities to the song Woman in Be My Mistake.

  7. I interpret it differently given the nature of the relationship described. Again, that's just one part of the song that leads to my issues. People can interpret it however they want and like it or not like it. Just offering my reasoning.

I disagree. The song's about a self-described "mistake," "I don’t want to hug, I just want to sleep," "I shouldn’t have called, because we shouldn’t speak," "Save all the jokes you’re going to make, Whilst I see how much drink I can take." I think there's plenty to look at and see a one sided situation here. One person cares so much they'd wait outside a hotel, compliments his clothes, wants to make jokes, wants to cuddle ... I dunno, there's more than enough there for me to draw this conclusion. It's in most of the song.

I'm just looking at the lyrics in front of me.

  8. I mean ... I'm saying that's bad to me too. Hah.

For the record - I also think it's bad...especially if it's used in any sort of predatory manner. I didn't read the song that way but your take is pretty interesting. Perhaps, this is my brain on pre-emptive damage control..

I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) will probably end up being my favorite song by this band. Particularly, given the year I’ve been through with my mental health.

Honestly, I've been through addiction and major mental health issues these last two years and I Always Wanna Die made me full on sob whilst listening to it. The lyrics cut deep, man.

Does anyone else think the line “Is you can’t survive, just try” is a callback to Give Yourself a Try? I’d love if they were mirroring the album like that

  21. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that, I'm a sucker for callbacks and self-referential stuff tbh.

After 4 listens today - early favorites are:
The 1975 (I'm such a sucker for this intro - does anyone else get reminded by Dark Fantasy by Kanye with the vocal effect?)

Love It If We Made It - Instant Classic, I'll never tire of this song

Sincerity is Scary - Great vibe, this band was born to perform with a choir

Mine - Love the jazz instrumentals, love the tempo - Reminds me of Cat Stevens - Father and Son from a lyrical perspective.

I Couldn't Be More in Love - Once again, I think I have this band figured out - they throw me an amazing curveball that shows how we've barely scratched the surface of what they are capable of.

I Always Wanna Die Sometimes - Love this song, Early favorite - Similar sentiment to ICBMIL, This song could (and should) blow up the Britpop charts..Love the Oasis influence I hear in this song

Those two are really close! I'd give a slight edge to "Give Yourself a Try."

  24. Listening to "I Couldn't Be More In Love" within the context of it being about the band/fans is interesting. (Also why I think I'll never put much stock in artist intent, because I like what I see it as/interpret it way more.)

  25. I may need to break this one back out in a few. I've been on a Coldplay kick today, but it may be time to go back in to The 1975.
