listened to a couple albums for the first time tonight/this morning

yuck's new album was p cool indie rock, some of the songs were really really good but the record dragged at other times.

sparklehorse's first album was kind of breathtaking and really interesting and definitely something i wanna spend more time with. i can tell they must have influenced a lot of my favorite bands.

attic abasement's new album fell a little short of my expectations (and the split with nod) but it was really good. they took their sound in a different direction that i'd hoped for but a lot of people will dig it i think.

  2. Currently listening to new o'brother album Endless Light. Absolutely incredible.

I've been on a buying spree lately. Loving new Into It. Over It., Donovan Woods, Chairlift, Brian Fallon, and Kendrick Lamar. I've also purchased Christon Gray, Steven Curtis Chapman and Hands Like Houses, but haven't had a chance to listen to those three yet.

  3. I'm curious if you feel the same as me. i like it when you sleep reminds me sooooo very much of When the Night (Lucia's debut). I like 1975's more, but honestly probably only by a margin. Listening to i like it when so much has been giving me urges to go listen to When the Night again, too.

Also, I just noticed that I can italicize text doing command+i, which we couldn't do in AP.net threads. Fantastic!

  4. You get it!

My favorite POP album of the year so far. Different than the 1975, definitely more unabashedly pop. Her melodies are so insanely tasteful throughout the album. Only one song on Moth that I don't love.

  5. I don't come back When the Night very often these days. I like it, but I think it suffers from the same thing the second one does as well, it just feels very one note. Could be that I haven't listened enough, but a lot of it just kind of blends together for me. Really like that album but it's more of a passing like versus a deeper love.

  6. the new Lucius album is really good

  7. Hmm. I guess it just hit me on a deeper level. I'm super picky when it comes to heavily 80s-inspired music, and When the Night was one of the first categorically 80's-sounding modern pop albums to totally break through all my walls. Honestly, i like it when is probably the second. Other similar albums, like last year's Brandon Flowers and Carly Rae albums, are ones that I can enjoy once but don't desire to go back to. One of those musical quirks that I'm just (like I said) super picky about, I suppose.

  8. Agreed, but there are a few songs that rub me really wrong. Not an album that I can listen to from top-to-bottom.

Big fan of that album as a driving record. Makes it pass by so nicely.

Currently remembering how good Give Up is. Ben Gibbard has a stellar back catalogue over the years.

I've been curious about the Beatles' solo works, so I listened to McCartney's Band On The Run. Will need to give it a couple more listens, but I think I like it.

I recently went back and listened to MCS's "My Dinosaur Life" and "Go" in the wake of their announcement because I feel like I never gave them the chance they really deserved. While I can't say they moved up the list of my favorite MCS albums, I can safely say I now officially like all of their albums.

I also listened to Julien Baker's music and immediately started kicking myself for not listening to her sooner.

In terms of new music, I'm liking the new O'Brother album so far. Also I thought IIOI's new album was great, it makes me even more excited for the IIOI/TWIABP show in April.

I'll definitely check those two out as well then. I probably shouldn't take much stock, but I read that critical reception for some of his early post-Beatles stuff wasn't great. This one was recommended to me though

It depends. His early stuff has its fans and its detractors. People hated that the songs were more like sketches and were really home-made, but that also has a very distinct charm and was what he was going for

I went back to Panic Stations yesterday for the first time since probably the month of release. I liked it then, but I borderline loved it yesterday. Having it suddenly be their swansong has definitely made me appreciate that album more.

I actually really liked Panic Stations, it felt in a lot of ways like a return to CTTM, but in that it also made it seem like such an announcement was imminent, it was just a matter of when. I was just hoping it wouldn't be so soon! Its significance as their last album shouldn't be lost on anyone. I mean each album has represented a different stage of Justin's life, from addiction and depression to recovery to "growing up" and everything in between; Panic Stations seemed like a lot of reflection.

It's definitely a return to CTTM. I think people wrote it off because it kind of sounds like that album but not as good. At least two of their 10 best songs are on that album though, IMO.

Lately it's been Colleen Green, The Ocean Blue and Afghan Whigs (Black Love). Teenage Wrist as well.

"I Can Feel You" and "Days Will Run Away."

Every day should be a Dawes day. I've been jamming All Your Favorite Bands a lot this week since our little conversation about them last week. "Don't Send Me Away" has been on repeat.

Can't stop listening to "Moon In The Water". He really is one of the best storytellers in music right now.

That was probably my first favorite song of theirs when I stumbled upon Nothing is Wrong back in the summer of 2011. I think I put it on the mixtape I made for the AP.net mixtape thread, actually.

  25. Still one of my favorite Dawes songs! I'll have to go check out those two MCS songs.
