Isn't Rian an executive producer on the next one? I assume that means he will have at least minor creative/story input.

In an ideal world, Rian and JJ would've split writing/directing duties for this last movie. That could've been something otherworldly.

That's what I was asking though, what in his movie specifically called attention to it? Because outside of a line or two, I think it was pretty much all just people talking about it outside of the movie itself.

All they implied is that Kyle/Snoke knew who she was on some level possibly. I don’t remember them ever really hinting at lineage. Maaaaybe the vision with the saber? But I feel like that was more to get her on the path to her destiny (finding Luke, new Jedi order)

Kylo autocorrecting to Kyle always makes me giggle.

TFA not once insinuated anything about reys background, the internet did and we let ourselves get swept up. IMO the only person to blame if youre upset with how it went in TLJ is yourself for letting the theories win.

No way. That'd be trash. Some narrative choices (like w/ Luke) I understand one disagreeing with (while still personally loving), but I can't wrap my mind around Rey being Luke's daughter or Obi-Wan's granddaughter or whatever being good.

I don't get this popular argument. They set up her background as being important. That's it. And, it's important that they're a bunch of nobodies. It matters to the story. It matters to the character.

If you say Johnson discarded Snoke, you're right. If you say he discarded Rey's lineage, you weren't paying attention.

I don't think Johnson discarded Rey's lineage, I just think Abrams teased that she has important lineage in an annoying way. Its one of the things I don't like about TFA, and something about Abrams' style that I personally don't like. Sometimes just telling a good story well is more enjoyable than constantly being teased with mysteries. A good mystery or reveal should feel natural in the story and not just feel like the filmmaker is being cute and/or purposely withholding information, even if that is exactly what they are doing. I ultimately love what Johnson decided to do but how Abrams teased stuff kinda set him up for where people could be annoyed.

I have only seen TFA twice so I am by no means an expert on it.

But what exactly did TFA do to tease her lineage? I’m asking for specific scenes and quotes.

For me it was her vision when she touches Luke's lightsaber and how those shots were framed, what was shown and withheld, the lightsaber calling out to her in Maz's basement at all in the first place, Snoke knowing who she is, her seemingly immense Force power and 'unearned' abilities. Its not something that bothered me very much, but I do think it is something Abrams did. If I had to break it down I'd say all the hoopla over her lineage was like 5% from what was actually in TFA and 95% just fans making up theories and being crazy. I disagree that TFA didn't insinuate at all.

It is most definitely a movie I want to sit down and re-watch. In fact, the next SW movie I watch will be TFA, I just don't know when it will be. I had a chance to watch a SW movie uninterrupted and I went with TLJ again. I just remember thinking I wanted TFA to be longer and not rush by so quickly.

I hope they will show Rey crafting a new one in the film.

& if you haven’t watched this yet, it’s great.

I would like to see Rey crafting a saber. I’m just glad she’ll have her own finally instead of using Anakin’s.

Rey’s parents being no one is such an integral part of her journey that they can’t change it. Ow. The entire movie she’s looking to pass the responsibility of taking down The First Order to someone else (Luke then Ben). She feels like she’s not special and can’t do it. Kylo when asking her to join him literally calls her nothing and her big action is to take back the lightsaber and accept her destiny. It’s already been established that you don’t need a lineage to become a Jedi in the prequels, and to paraphrase Snoke she’s the light rising to meet the darkness of Kylo. Why does it need to be more?

If Kylo was any other stereotypical villain, it would be easy to shrug off his statements about Rey's parents as a lie. But Kylo wears his heart on his sleeve, he has no logical reason to want to lie to her about her family. For him, being completely honest with her and obliterating her expectations about her family is his best ploy for gaining sympathy with Rey.

Also let's not forget that Kylo doesn't lie to Rey once throughout TJL, not even when describing how he destroyed Luke's temple. He tells her the truth exactly as he saw the events play out from his point of view: his uncle tried to murder him. It may not be the entire truth, but it's the only truth he knows.

Kylo is the best. He's probably my favorite character other than Han Solo.

I really like Finn. I really like the new trilogy in general so far. I haven't seen the spin-offs, somehow never had the time.

I like Poe a lot, Finn is pretty cool, and Rey is great, but I don't feel connected to any of them like I do with Kylo.

    I do not exist.

I don't want Rey to have 'significant' parentage - please don't change that.

HOWEVER, I would love to know more about her parents or at least have her process the reality that they abandoned her more significantly. I know we are using the word 'nobodies' but it's true that no one is a nobody. She was clearly waiting for them to return or counting the days that passed in TFA... it would be interesting to me for her to explore these feelings directly, especially with the loss of Luke and Han who both could have substituted as father figures but ultimately haven't.

No one goes from 'I thought I was waiting for my parents to return' to 'they're dead nobodies who sold me' to 'this has no impact my outlook and emotions ever again'. She didn't have the chance because she had to turn Kylo's offer down straight away and then rescue the resistance, but I would find some satisfaction if this is explored slightly in the final instalment.

Edit: sorry the conversation moved on whilst I wrote this. I love Rey. I love all the characters. The Last Jedi was brilliant.

Oh, I wouldn't mind learning more about her parents, I just don't want them to be connected to anyone in the Star Wars legacy. A couple flashbacks or whatever would be fine with me.

With only like 2.5 hrs of story remaining in this trilogy/saga, i cant imagine wanting to spend a single second on anymore backstory for anyone.

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

it all depends on the story. Rey still needs to have an arc in episode 9 so if it’s relevant I’d definitely be down for it. But I agree as long as they aren’t a legacy character. I think a happy medium would be making her parents Imperials who were in hiding or something. Gives them some tie as opposed to NO info on them at all.

    “The greatest teacher, failure is”

so we’ve already seen the Force Awaken in Rey. We saw her go from abdicating responsibility to others to finally taking ownership that she needs to be the one to save the galaxy, saw her essentially steal the baton of the Jedi from Luke so it doesn’t die since he wouldn’t pass it to her, saw her shut off the connection with ben, and saw her finally gaining her family with Leia, Finn and the Rebellion.

Anybody have any hopes for what Rey’s arc will be in episode 9?
