Can I get a moment of your time to speak to you about Blinks lord and savior Matt Skiba?

We talk too much / We talk in circles

What is Matt Skiba's most memorable riff? Or his signature riff? Radio? (And I love Alkaline Trio.)

I can think of 20 memorable riffs from Tom. That doesn't mean he's a virtuoso or a good performer. He simply writes memorable guitar parts in a variety of different ways: note-driven riff; arpeggio; dominant lead; power chord progression; octave melody etc.

Why do you think Jerry added synth to Alkaline Trio's music on Crimson? They needed another dimension to their music so it wasn't just power chords and octaves.

Nothing Tom writes is hard to play but that doesn't mean those parts are easy to write.

Matt would never write the main riffs of Feeling This, What's My Age Again, M+M's, Gary, Adam's Song, Natives, Stay Together... the list goes on.

Can Matt play those parts? Absolutely.

Can Matt play them well night after night? Absolutely. (And that's why we want him in Blink.)

But can he write those (type of) parts? Absolutely not.

    Give what you can.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but the horse is dead. Deepest sympathies.

  8. Should I point out Mark wrote the "Dammit" riff?

I'm still not understanding why "Matt wouldn't write what Tom does" is at all relevant when "but he can play it just fine" pretty much cancels it out. Matt is not Tom. If he were writing shit he normally doesn't to sound like Tom people would be giving him even more shit for it. And I mean, the average listener does not give a shit about note driven riffs and appregio's. They just want to hear a competent musician.

Matt needed synth to finally make his guitar good. I KNEW all the records before that were lacking something! Fuck, they're ruined for me forever now.

You know what irks me? "Emo," is rarely mentioned around here. It's such a great tune!

And they added a 2nd live guitarist during that era because Matt doesn't have 4 arms, like all capable guitarists do.

Both Matt and Tom are at the very least competent guitarists who are both creative enough to come up with memorable riffs/craft iconic songs.

Waggy, Emo both make my top 5 Blink songs of all time. Those songs are almost 20 years old and I still feel the emotion in the them.

Theses are all great songs, but I'm really glad blink matured on Untitled and decided to name drop some Nightmare Before Christmas characters in I Miss You.
