Didn't realize so many people still view Rogue One so highly. Still the only SW movie that bores me to tears.

Rogue One takes the whole Star Wars thing to a relatively darker, more grounded place (admittedly with some big exceptions sprinkled through), which would be an awful approach for the whole franchise but makes for a great standalone film.

Like, the embrace of classic pulp adventure is a big reason Star Wars works. It's why Episodes IV & V are my untouchable top 2, and why a lot of the criticisms of TLJ (like Leia using the Force) sound so stupid to me. But, the Rogue One snapshot through the (hindered, yet still obvious) Gareth Edwards lens is great. As much as I love K-2SO & the deliciously corny Vader joke, I wish it'd gone even further. It's a really cool space war film.

I will say, Last Jedi does the Rogue One war theme better than Rogue One does. But, on an aesthetic level, Rogue One still rules.

(Except, Tarkin is trash w/ frustrating industry implications.)

Rogue One had way too much going on in the first act and not enough getting us to like or understand our main character. But that third act is pure gold.

  8. I would say we didn’t get enough about any of the characters in RO. The first couple times I saw it, that bothered me. But the more I watch it, the more I love the movie. I put it up there in the top 5 SW movies for sure.

That is definitely true. It's partially a case of too many characters. Bodhi didn't have much impact on the story, so you probably could have written him out to give others more time. I think I liked Chirrut and Baze the best because they had the most well fleshed out backstory and solid chemistry.

    Solo > RO

The 5 minutes where Han is enlisted in the Imperial army shows the grittiness of the galaxy's war better than all of RO did.

I only saw Solo recently, but Rogue One is still way, way better imo. Although Solo wasn't as bad as I expected, I had fun with it, but it still had some really big problems.

Rogue One has become one of my favorite Star Wars movies.

I view Rogue One & Gareth Edwards the same way I view Iron Man 3 & Shane Black:

The big studio brand machine kept the film from fully embracing the filmmaker's style, which was a mistake. The flavor is a big watered down. And yet, the marriage of franchise flavor & filmmaker flavor (holy alliteration) still makes for a compelling watch.

[disclaimer that, after this year, I'm significantly less fond of Black]

  13. My issue with Rogue One and Godzilla, both from Edwards, is that while they are absolutely beautiful films and I wanted to love both, I was just bored by each.

I like the premise of Rogue One but every time I put it on I shut it off after 15 minutes. To me, not a very rewatchable film.

That said, glad others enjoy it. I was also not a huge fan of TLJ but did love TFA... different strokes.

More than anything I think I'm still bitter that half of the coolest looking scenes in the trailers didn't even end up in the final cut.

I was happy with the way Krennic went out, killed by his own creation, but I really wish this shot was still in there.

  18. I rewatching TLJ right now for the first time since it came out and I’m already annoyed at the way Luke throws the saber and how snoke tells Kylo to “take that ridiculous thing off.”
I feel like both of those moments were very “look how we did what you didn’t expect!” But absolutely not in clever ways. And the mask line seemed like lip service to people that thought it was lame he had a mask like Vader as opposed to write around those things in ways no one thought of. Idk it’s just so frustrating. I wanted to love it and I didn’t. TFA is fine but Solo and RO just do so much more for me. Really hope they do something with the Obi-Wan film sooner than later.
Semi-related, I forgot I cut the blooper reel for this! I remembered when Leia slapped Poe. I think she did it like 46 times in the raw dailies! Haha

Edit: ugh. Now space-Leia. Just so many strange tonal choices. Not for me, unfortunately.

Empire is the best, AOTC is the worst, the ranking of the others don't really matter to me much outside the other prequels.

People who complain about Leia saving herself with the Force should be kept the heck away from fantasy/pulp/adventure storytelling (which is what Star Wars has always fallen under) forever, tbh.

isn't there a part in Rebels or Clone Wars where they use the Force to create like a bubble underwater to breathe in or something?
