I 100% agree with this. Saves the Day was once my favorite band, but I cannot get into this album whatsoever. My music taste has changed quite a bit since high school/college and this just doesn't work for me anymore.

My personal approach is to go with one that coordinates with the album cover or, barring that, black or clear depending on what's available.

Cool. You think this sounds nothing like Sound the Alarm? Nothing is certainly a stretch.

Either way, this is just not something I can enjoy. I hear the lyrics to the first song and immediately want to play something else. Sorry.

 

The band has changed a lot, and I get not everyone being down with the different phases theyve had. this iteration is sounds like friggin van halen to me, which I think is kickass but is big and riffy and not very much like their most beloved records at all. I also just love Saves/Chris so Chris singing about Saves/Chris is something I couldn't be more down for.

 

Get after Through Being Cool and Stay What You Are. Those are money.

 

StA was pretty much a straight-up punk record. This has elements of In Reverie and the self-titled crossed with like 70's/80's rock.

If it weren't for Chris' voice I don't think I could blindly identify that the band who made this record and the band who made any of their other records were the same band.

all of mine are on colors except for Daybreak. I also think the black self titled had some wicked noise issues so I had to get White

A few things:

Pitchfork sucks and should be treated like The Onion/The Hard Times.

I don't mind positivity in lyrics, but I generally dislike things being so on-the-nose and devoid of relatability so this record (except for some of 29) does nothing lyrically for me.

If anything, this album makes me excited to see what the band does next as I like the guitars in this album and the energy and since it (presumably) won't be another autobiography of the band, it should provide much different lyrics.

Bones is still great.

 

I enjoy reading reviews and I always take them with a grain of salt. Doesn’t matter what it is...music, movies, books...there’s always going to be something, but it’s just funny how consistently awful Pitchfork reviews are. They’re so bad they might as well be considered terrible satire.

Anyways...album rules.

 

Rosé is such an angry song on such a happy album. I love it.

i think their reviews are very well written and insightful for the most part but they can be way out of touch sometimes. i don't think this is an album meant to be scrutinized in the same way they do with the music they usually review. it's half celebration, half reflection on chris's career and life as a whole, and it's silly for the most part, and he knows that. i don't take the "oh you'll love the record you'll know it front and back" at face value; it's more like he's letting us know it's going to be a total cheesefest beforehand, hoping we'll align with his mindset before going all "wtf is this shit" on the album.

 

yeah it definitely is going to work so much more for fans that have kept up with the band and know chris' deal, less so people dropping in to check them out having only listened to TBC and SWYA. and the reviewer kind of comes off here looking like a jackass.
