Much better than I expected it to be. Singles work great in context

So I doubt anybody cares of my opinion but I'll state it anyways. I'll admit first and foremost I'm an In Reverie guy. Yes, I got into the band via Through Being Cool and bought Stay What You Are on release. My tastes changed a lot around the time of the In Reverie era and this basically resulted in Saves being the only band from the emo/punk scene that still really mattered to me. I saw them in March 2004 on tour with Grandaddy where they played mostly Stay What You Are, In Reverie, two new songs ("Zebra" and "Bye Bye Baby") and maybe, possibly "All-Star Me" and that was it. I was totally excited that this new, mellow version of Saves The Day was what was in store for the future.

Fast forward to late 2005, early 2006 and I realize that apparently Chris took all the In Reverie criticism to heart and totally changed his sound back to something more akin to the early stuff. And you won't convince me that this was totally organic. If In Reverie went like gold or platinum I doubt you'd have gotten all that punky stuff after. But regardless I was generally bummed by the direction of most of Sound The Alarm and Under the Boards but in retrospect I hear a decent amount of great songwriting and instrumental performances on those albums. I had high hopes for Daybreak but kinda was let down upon release though I still think there are probably about four great tunes on it. Then came the self titled record and for whatever reason it just did not click for me. Still doesn't. It's boring pop-punk to me. Maybe I'll give it another go one of these days and it'll hit me.

Now, I haven't heard the album and I'm either gonna wait 'til midnight tonight or 'til I receive my CD. But anyways, I've heard 3 songs so far. With "Rendezvous" I thought that the music was good, the lyrics not so much. "Kerouac & Cassady" I just don't like. The lyrics are once again super lame touring nonsense. And then "Side by Side" was by far the worst. Chris' singing is cornier than some of snarled, faux-Britishisms that marred Sound The Alarm.

Now for those who have listened to the full album, is there anything on here that somebody like me would actually be into? Should I just send the CD back for a return? Should I give up on this band as I'm obviously never going to get what I was hoping to from them?

And for those who TLDR, I get it. Maybe i'm too passionate about this stuff. It's only some punk band, and if my taste changed get over it. I feel ya.

Also, speaking of that song "Zebra", does anybody have a live boot of it? I've never seen it online.

Saves The Day is my favorite band. In Reverie is my favorite album...and I love the new album.

Honestly my least favorite song is Kerouac and Cassady by a mile. You'll probably dig the album more than that one, but it won't be the return to form that you're looking for.

When I search for it, I find 2013 comments of yours asking about it! Haha, cool.

...not helpful at all, but cool! ;)

Edit: It sounds like I’m saying that I found 2,013 separate comments of yours. I hope it’s obvious that I meant the year 2013, haha. I’m probably overthinking my original comment.

The middle section of 29 is everything I like about Saves the Day in one song. It has the In Reverie chord stylings, and In Reverie changed the way I play music on guitar and bass when it came out. Chris helped me break out of power chords and standard major/minor chords and blew the door open into the world of chord theory.

The lyrics to the middle section of 29 are more personal than those on In Reverie and remind me more of Daybreak.

I doubt I will listen to this album from start to finish very often as I do not connect with some of the "start a band" songs. But Rose, 1997, and the end of 29 hold weight as being top notch Saves the Day songs.

Lyrically, there is still reference to the halloween and green eyes themes from Daybreak referencing when he met his wife, but its a total bummer now since Chris is no longer married per a recent podcast interview. I really look up to Chris both musically and as a human and I hope he is doing well.

I have seen them maybe a dozen times and he has always been a pro, but reviews and videos of recent shows don't look promising.

I joined this forum for this thread since I am obsessed with this band and it looks like you folks are big fans too.

Odds of them playing 29 live? Haha

The section from 11:55 - 15:50 is easily
my favorite “song” from them since Sound The Alarm.

They’ve played “Daybreak” live a bunch of times. “9” is twice as long, but I feel like they’re crazy enough to try it.

This would be an interesting starting point for a new STD fan.

I'll say it surprised me how much I actually like it. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think any of the songs (except maybe 29) are top-tier for me. The album isn't either but I do enjoy it quite a bit.

Welcome to the party! I agree.. 29 is probably the best thing Saves has put out. I know it was circled around here in the rumor mill that Chris and his wife split, so if that's the case it makes the 8:30 and on sections so heart breaking. There's so much passion in Chris' lyrics when he talks about her.

This album is so dang good, worth the wait for sure. I've already listened to it three times and will again before the night's through. Every song is great, but '29' is just fucking immense!
