I think they've just always been really conscious of their brand/messaging and wanted to control how people consume their live shows and you can't really do that if you're playing a 30 minute slot to an audience that doesn't care about you where your options for stage design/show planning is kinda limited. Not sure they could deliver the same kind of show as they do on their headlining tours if they were playing with FOB. I feel like touring with FOB is like when metal bands open for slayer and the crowd just really doesn't care about anyone other than the headliner

As long as your death involves a metaphysical examination into your physche played out as a 007 movie and you come back, I’ll accept it

I HAVE RETURNED FROM THE IN STUDIO YESTERDAY!
Let me try to gather my thoughts, and answer any questions.
-There were about 50 winners, plus some label people, that they CRAMMED into the tiniest studio room with Matty, Geroge and a producer (Justin? Jason?) and played us a handful of new songs from the record, and then had like an informal Q+A inbetween. I'll go into some of the new songs now... (but first disclaimer, and Matty stressed this: picking singles for the album was very difficult since its truly all over the place, none of the songs really sound that much like one another, the ones they played for us sounded completely different from the singles, and are meant to be heard as a complete cohesive whole, so he really pushed wanting people to hear the whole record, in order, before they passed judgement. That said, the new songs are GREAT)
-I couldn't be more in love: sort of like an 80s power ballad, like an I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore or a Journey song, with that very 80sy keyboard sound that you have on Somebody Else. Really huge beautiful vox from Matty here. I think this is one of their favorites on the record because it was the first and only one that they elected to play for us, rather than asking the crowd, which leads us to...
-I always wanna die, sometimes: this songs got like this wild dixie chicks/googoo dolls/mathcbox 20 sounding guitars and honestly sounds like them trying to do Iris, (which I actually caught onto and asked them about, to which matty got excited and said yes they actually worked with the producer of GGD on it!). Huge sounding climactic closer, maybe my favorite of the bunch.
-The man who married a robot: spoken word story read by a Siri-esque voice about a guy who 'falls in love' with the internet. at the end it builds into like a beautiful string crescendo. Kind of an interlude, although it think it was still like 3-4 min long.
After that, we kind of wanted to end on something upbeat, so they went with...
-I like America/America likes me: Very hip hop influenced track, with Matty having crazy autotuned vocals for the whole thing. I know this probably isnt very accurate or smart because i dont listen to like, rap at all, but for some reason it reminded me of like, Trap Queen? idk. fun bouncy song.
-after that, they brought us into a bigger studio room where their gear was set up, and played us three songs acoustically (Paris, Be My Mistake, and "the first song he ever wrote", *I'm not familiar enough w them or their old bands catalogs to know if it was actually a song recorded or available or what*) first time they said they'd played for a real audience in over a year
-Be My Mistake: typical sad bastardy acoustic song, just matty on guitar, lyrics about cheating on gf/being caught between two lovers. Really pretty actually.

then they did a meet and greet and we got a Polaroid. (those are knees not a butt i promise) [IMG]
They were actually SUPER SUPER NICE and down to earth dudes, which was kinda shocking to me since I've only seen them perform/heard some of their interviews. He said the focus of the new record is telling the truth/honesty, which is freeing but also a challenge. HE said the reason for two albums is because a double album never quite works out/is a daunting listener experience, and he prefered to just make two albums and tour them both rather than be stuck with one album for like two years. said he went from having 0 ideas to hundreds over night and wanted to air them over a ton of music, also mentioned how a lot of rap artists are just constantly putting out content and never getting bored or stuck and that he liked that. They just really seem to care about their fans and the experience of themselves as a band, and that rules.
I probably am not touching on a ton of stuff so feel free to ask anything else and I'll do my best to recall it. WHEW I'm tired.

I will never forgive myself for missing that show. I don't know what I was thinking. I did see them play two songs at Music Millennium, and then a few shows at the Roseland, but the Doug Fir would have been unreal.
