Yep....I'm just in *deep sigh* territory right now. The amount of damage that has been done over these two years is just brutal, and even the prospects of winning back the House don't make me feel much better about it atm.

I’m all ready to vote and I’m getting everyone I know to go vote as best I can. But god damn I can’t lie, I’m not entirely convinced voting will save us at this point. Obviously it’s better than nothing but short of a violent revolution I have no idea how to really fix this fucking country. Say we have a blue wave and somehow snatch the presidency in 2020, the pendulum will swing back the other way eventually. There’s no winning in two party politics. I’m sorry this view is so defeatist and I’m not giving up the fight. But this system makes everything look so bleak.

The system is the problem, the only logical conclusion of this system is waves of massive corruption and extreme partisanship, the way its designed includes that as a rule. We would need a party committed to massive, massive reforms, or literally the political will to investigate and prosecute the people who are pushing and profiting off of this shitshow. I don't think either are likely soon and it might already be too late, these people are too far gone, and Democrats wouldn't even want to fight like they would have to if they had power.

I'm very hopeless at the moment, can only hope that people that are pissed now stay pissed and translate anger into action.

Nah I'm right where you are. Bleak and defeatist are good adjectives for it. No other way to explain the feelings right now.

I...just want better shit for the people around me. And even though it's not, like, my responsibility to make it happen, it still feels like it. I want to give people around me better education and less debt and health care and etc and I feel like shit that I can't make it happen.

Average age of retirement for the last 11 SCOTUS retirements was 80. Which means Dems need to win the next 3 presidential elections to have a shot at regaining control...and that's only if Thomas retires at 80. If he stays on longer...well..

    Need someone to die, basically.

Also, and I know it's been beaten to death, but we need young people to vote. That 18-29 age block....if we could even just get 50% of them to vote, the government of this country looks so different right now.

How do you reverse that?? How do you get them out to the polls? Even this type of anger won't get them out at that rate...and, frankly, depending on anger and resentment to get voters out is super unhealthy for a democracy, to say the least.

    Agreed.

I would 100% get behind someone running entirely on the platform of replacing the current government structure with a parliamentary system with MMR or some other system that ensures the makeup of parliament matches the makeup of how people voted.

Yeah didn’t trump pull it off because of those angry and resentful voters deciding last minute to turn out? That could easily backfire

  10. One person can’t change the system. That would take constitutional amendments. And support in ... deep red states.

Can’t even get progressive mayors in some of those. :-/

I'm hoping that the new registrated voters in tx change things.

Also hoping that the new Puerto Rican population in Florida can shift that state.

Voting just feels like trying to win a rigged game by following the rules.

But really it's only a month away and we need a fucking win.

The only hope is that our collective memories aren't short. But seeing as the US exists as the country it is in the state it does, my hope for that is real thin.

Just a follow up from this conversation a few days ago, I can confirm that in NJ the absentee ballot does not need a stamp, says postage will be paid by addressee. It must be a state thing I guess. I'd be interested to see which states do and don't if that is the case
