An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

there are just a few things that bother me about this record - like why did the title track never move beyond "Casio keyboard demo" stage and how does the album sound over and underproduced at the same time - but overall my favourite since NWFT

Absolutely. It’s always been Travis and Mic (and maybe Zach?) doing the backing vocals. I’d love to hear more of Josh, he has a really distinctive voice. It makes me happy seeing how happy Josh looks to be in the band again.

i think that the real magic trick of this band is still evoking an emotional response whether you follow the fiction or not. sometimes all it really takes is a catchy melody and some words that sound nice together. not to dilute the bands songwriting or claudios lyrics, personally for me i get a lot out of his lyrics both as a big fan of the Amory Wars and just in general through a more personal lens, but hopefully you all catch what im saying.

Claudio’s ability to write hooks is ridiculous

I’ve finally had the chance to give this a listen outside of work.

I think I let my hype get a little out of hand, which isn’t really fair to the record. I kinda wanted it to immediately blow my favorite Coheed records out of the water. It didn’t quite achieve that but it is still a really awesome record with some truly incredible highs.

That stretch from Love Protool through The Gutter, in particular, had me absolutely soaring.

And that vinyl package is so impressive in person. Money well spent.

I think I found another callback. In The Pavilion, Claudio sings, “there’s no going home”, and it matches up really close with the “please wait, bring me home” in 2’s My Favorite 1.

Gotta say I’m less a fan of Old Flames with every listen. It just packs no punch and says nothing of substance, kinda falls in with The Running Free and You Got Spirit Kid into their throwaway singles pile

Is there sort of a quick synopsis of the basis of the story of this album that I could read laid out anywhere? I’m on my first listen and enjoying the album, also this is my first listen of any coheed album haha.

Gonna catch hell for this, but that's more how I feel about The Pavilion.

They used to write pop songs with layers and subtle twists that made them far more than what met the eye. Now most of the pop stuff is just bubblegum. "Old Flames" at least goes balls to the wall being every bit as catchy as something like "The Suffering" (even if lacking the subtle flares and verse-to-verse quirks), which I guess is all we can ask for these days.

Thank god for the greater prog:pop ratio on this one by their recent standards.

    Uhhhh teebs

So if I was a new fan, I would find out which albums you like then dig into the story once you realize you like the songs, because it is not necessary to enjoy the music at all.

^ what he said... loved this band for a decade and still couldn't tell you the first thing about the story or more than a few character names.

I am so glad I waited until album release to listen to Old Flames. It’s the one I find myself going back to and into my head the most

If not for "I'm spyin on you Newo" being a hook that stuck in my head for a month back in the day I'd be right with you there

you all forget that Claudio is a character himself?

There's also Wilhelm Ryan who's.... the villain?

    And Sirius Amory

Couldn't tell you a thing that happens though other than Coheed & Cambria are murdered, Claudio is their son and has the power to turn into The Crowing. I think.

We reach for the longest shadow

SSTB - Coheed and Cambria kill their children, son Claudio escapes
IKS - Claudio is coming of age and turns into the crowing (savior) and a lot of other stuff that I should remember from the comics
GA - things get meta and the writer of the story is introduced, and a talking bicycle convinces him to kill off Ambellina in the story since his girlfriend broke up with him and he’s PISSED about it.
NWFT - Who knows, the crowing ends the world at the end tho
YOTBR - origin story about dr hohenberger and cyborg dragonflies and his wife dies.
Afterman - before YOTBR. astronaut discovers the keywork (force that holds planets together) is all tortured souls, and a couple of them mess with him pretty good then another one saves him. He makes it back home and things aren’t the same. His wife dies in a car crash, he goes back to the keywork to be with her.
TCBTS - Claudio in real life had a son
Vaxis - don’t really know yet.
