When I saw them in Philly at the Mann Center a year or two ago he also did the extended background vocal part of Limousine and I was like whoa what is this?? I had to go on Absolutepunk and ask about it too

    Maybe so, maybe not.

They have been doing this as far back as 2013 if I remember right.

On the subject of Soco. I don't think anything will top Jesse playing it before midnight on New Years Eve and just repeating the end until midnight hit. So amazing.

I only wish you would've been able to record it, but that's me being selfish. Happy you got to soak that one in because it was sublime.

Yeah, I did record stuff from that show, but I knew I had limited space so I made sure to try and get all the songs that they don't normally play (the rare ones from YFW, Nobody Moves, etc.)

I was there. One of my favorite memories. I thought the timing was funny. He repeated the lyrics for atleast an extra minute which felt like more than a minute lol. One of the best Brand New shows to have ever happened.

@Drewski I had no idea your MJM tattoo was inspired by Only In Dreams. Just saw that today in the tattoo thread. awesome.

We talk too much / We talk in circles

    I could use everyone's help.

I feel like an outsider for not getting into Brand New to the same degree that I have with Thrice. I know all their radio hits via Deja and I love "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot."

However, can anyone recommend a collection of songs that reflects the REST of their catalog so I can finally connect with this band after all these years?

You don't have to include songs from Deja Entendu, just some other stuff that is accessible.

    Avoid singles whenever possible.

Thank you in advance, Brand New-Masters.

I personally think The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is their best album. Start to finish it's absolutely fucking brilliant. But I can't recommend individual songs - that's like picking a favourite child.

Thanks man! And yeah, I went in wanting a combo of Jacob Bannon art that I tied into "Only In Dreams" in my mind (Converge's "Jane Doe" cover and "Death Comes Brightly"), but we ended up with that...I prefer what we came up with haha.

The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me, is genuinely, from start to finish, is the way to go. I don't want to set your expectations too high, but as soon as you get the chance, sit down with some quality headphones and listen through it. My opinions have shifted on some aspects of the tracks in recent years, but this album stands firm as my favorite of all time. Beggars is essentially tied with it, but not quite alongside.

If I was trying to get someone into Brand New I would make a mix with the following songs:

    something like...

Jude Law and a Semester Abroad
    70x7
    Soco Amaretto Lime
    Sic Transit Gloria
The Quiet Things That Know One Ever Knows
    Sowing Season
    Degausser
    You Won't Know
    Sink
    Bought A Bride
    Mene

EDIT: My obvious real answer is to listen to the discography from start to finish.

Yeah you're in luck with Brand New as they only have three albums more than what you've heard. TDAG would be the way to go for sure. Although now if you have Deja then it wouldn't be a bad idea to try a few of the demos now first as they're out there in high quality.

    Good Man
    Fork and Knife
    Nobody Moves
    Missing You
    Coca Cola
    Battalions
    1996

    Then TDAG as it's perfect.

Anyone know what happened to Derrick Sherman? How come he doesn't tour with the band anymore?

There's a couple rumors but unless it's from the source (Derrick himself), we can just assume he has other things going on. None of them worth talking about imo.
