When I said Beggars, I meant the majority of the album, not just the song. I’ll clarify.

On the note of Thrice and faith, I still remember getting TAITA for my birthday (in '07 after buying Alchemy Index Vols. I & II on a whim opening week; I was a late bloomer) and taking in "Stare at the Sun" the first time. My faith was at its most strained, and I connected to those lyrics so much.

I don't have the angst over faith now that I did then (even at my worst, I'm more content in my questions), so I don't experience that song the same way anymore. Part of me actually doesn't like listening to that song as much for that reason. But, another part of me will always love that song for putting into words the tension and desperation that weighed on my heart at that time. Doesn't hurt that it's also really good.

(Dang it, I'm supposed to be working on some stuff related to church work, funny enough. Guess I should get back to work.)

I know what you mean, but I’ve always been able to enjoy whatever Dustin is singing about as it comes to his faith. I like that each record gives a snapshot of where he is at in his walk.

Yeah Listen Through Me is just cringy, sorry. Musically and lyrically. A non Christian can appreciate a song like Moths to Flame as it’s a biblical story without being preachy. In Exile can have many interpretations outside religious beliefs.

Palms and TBE don’t have any obvious Christian references. Dustin may still be a Christian but he’s obviously rethinking some things and...leaning into the grey. I don’t foresee any Thrice album in the future having any “Listen Through Me” or Christian type songs.

Bingo. The biblical references on Vheissu are very Old Testament/parable which are much more interesting to a non-Christian

On a random note I've been trying to get a friend of mine into Thrice and I have failed miserably. He told me he doesn't like his voice... wth??? I didn't know that was possible.

Like Moths to A Flame is about Peter. For Miles is quoting John.

    New Testament.

Also, the whole bible is of the Christian faith. Why is the Old Testament more interesting to a non Christian? Also, the New Testament has an incredible amount of parables. This isn’t making sense.

Didn't feel like that to me, the blunt and up front lyrics disappointed me, I mean this is a good amount of the reason TBEITBN I don't like as much either, both those albums failed me lyrically in some places. I rather enjoy the more ambiguous lyrics in their other albums and I feel like this is a return to form for the most part. It helps for me that all those songs you mentioned above are better to me than 90% of Major/minor. Although Major/minor contains one of my all time faves "Words in the Water", I know that is biblical themed as well, but feels less in your face. To sum it all up, it was all just too straightforward to me.

I mean, take Blinded. It’s about Paul. Lyrically it’s as straight forward as The Messenger (Isaiah) and Like A Moth to Flame (Peter) are.

I don’t say this to change your feelings, I just don’t understand the reasons.

I dunno, that's as much as I can explain it, if you don't understand it, that's fine too. I just think Major/minor does a worse job with the biblical themes than their other albums and piles them on in one record a little too much. It's obvious I'm not the only one that feels this way, so there has to be something there that throws people off. I tried to explain the best way I could on why I feel it does that for me.

Yeah I love JMM. Man, I’ll revisit that too! It came out in 2015 I think which is when a JMM album (and a mewithoutYou album for that matter) came out. Maybe I just didn’t give it enough time. Thanks for the recommendations.

Just Breathe is one of the most interesting songs they've ever written, IMO

And Beyond the Pines one of the most beautiful - it's minimal in just the right way, and its message and delivery go a long way in making this album feel cohesive

Crazy I know. Gonna try and recommend one of the new songs. How could you not like Blood On Blood?

I’d almost say it feels like him looking for compromise, especially thinking of “Only Us”, “The Grey”, and “Everything Belongs”.

I feel like I have to clarify since I hopped in the thread: not a massive Thrice fan but definitely a fan of Beggars, TBEITBN, and this one
