I saw it in imax yesterday at 445 with only ~10 people in the theater. Surprised, I probably would not have enjoyed it as much if it wasn't for the imax environment.

I think if The Nun was a standalone film it would have been ok but within the context of the Conjuring Universe I thought it was pretty poor by comparison to others.

I’ve only seen the first conjuring but what’s the common thread between these movies?

I guess the common thread would be varying random chance encounters with the films version of Ed and Lorraine Warren, which is pretty thin. The Nun is essentially a semi origin story of the demon that is a troublemaker in Conjuring 2.

I know it also borders on comedy, but Tremors is one of my favorite films

Tremors was great. Lots of fond memories watching that movie every time TNT played it in television haha.

Am I the only horror fan utterly bored by Conjuring movies?

I wouldn’t say I’m bored, but I’m not sucked into their universe. I haven’t seen either Annabelle movies. I’ll probably see The Nun eventually because the set pieces look gorgeous, but its entirely possible I’ll miss it. I do enjoy the actual Conjuring films, more so the first. But I definitely understand people’s dislike for them.

That being said, I’ll root for any sort of horror universe/franchise since so few seem to be successful. I’m still super bummed the Universal Dark Universe didn’t find legs. I love the Universal Monsters and would love to see serious entries back on the big screen. Get rid of the Tom Cruise action horror blockbuster and treat the genre right.

Part 2 is a worthy follow up but the rest of the sequels suck.

aside from Halloween and Suspiria (which is in November for that award run anyway), are there any big horror releases scheduled for October? I was talking about this with a friend the other day and we're both constantly baffled by how studios flub this every year. People WANT to see scary movies during Halloween season, just put out like...one, and make it marginally easy to go see.

I agree. I was actually excited at first when tom cruise was cast because I was hoping it was him diving into a non action film again and then I saw the trailer haha. i'll probably still check it out since it's on HBO. and if I don't like it, I still have the Brendan Fraiser one and of course, the original. the Universal Monsters boxset is one of my favorite I own. I will continue to cross my fingers Universal teams up with Blumhouse.

Is It a Horror Movie? Yes. Duh. older article, but feel it really stands well as we're still in what I think is a really great era of horror and the discussion of mainstream horror not being called horror.

I watched the most recent on and it was so damn weird. Jamie Kennedy shouldn't be getting work.

Watched "Always Shine" on Shudder last night. Enjoyed it, solid Mulholland Drive vibes, Mackenzie Davis was exceptional.

Those were my thoughts, too!! It's a Shudder-exclusive, apparently? Quick little psychological thriller, came out in 2016. I enjoyed it!

  24. Does Goosebumps 2 count lol? Ya I'm surprised there's not more, but hopefully that means Halloween and Suspiria do well.

edit: There's also that Eli Roth movie for kids. I'm also seeing that there's a movie called Hell Fest about a serial killer in an amusement park releasing late Sept, but idk how wide of a release it's getting. I've never heard of it til now.
