So because a % of people didn't receive the record well, the % that actually likes the record, that lineup, the songwriting, the content of the lyrics... we don't know what we're talking about? That makes zero sense. Reception doesn't equate whether a record is good or bad. But anyways, it's an endless argument. You don't like the record, I like the record.

    (Also, its a good record.)

The way that situation was handled was insane. I remember people were still pulling in after Blink finished because AAR dropped and the show got pushed up

So because you think it’s a good record the people who don’t don’t know what they’re talking about? Your argument goes both ways. You’re entitled to think whatever you want about the record. But like I said the reception speaks for itseld

I think it’s just silly to say that reception speaks for itself, that’s all. In general, great records go under-received all the time. I don’t think that’s a good benchmark to judge any record.

I remember in 2010 or 2011 on AbsolutePunk, I caught sooo much shit for suggesting New Again was actually pretty solid and that within 10 years, fans would generally view it positively/ as underrated

the first time i listened to new again i thought it sucked bc it wasn't what i wanted from them at all. the second time i listened to it i thought "huh well some of these songs are still pretty good." then i ended up playing it in my car for a month

Right there with ya. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I really, really dig it and have since it was released. The guitar work on it is easily my favorite part and that's all credit to Fazzi. Eddie is a very reliable meat and potatoes guitarist that can power chord with the best of them, but Fazzi took the guitar parts out of the box.

The melodic turns on that album are where the experiments lie. Not particularly obvious compared to how a lot of other bands experiment with their sound, but there are definitely things about that album that show how gifted Fazzi was technically as an all-around musician— and that I genuinely don’t believe Fred or John would have thought of in a million years. That’s what sets that album apart for me.

I’m sure Fred had the ability, just not the interest

Yeah definitely. Fred went to school for jazz guitar, I think. It wouldn’t surprise me if he or Fazzi literally wrote the music on manuscript paper. I believe John has some technical proficiency and knowledge of music theory, but not to the same level as the others. I recall John saying in a podcast that he found it intimidating trying to learn a lot of Fred’s parts.

I can’t really argue that one way or another, but something like what Fazzi went on to do with Happy Body Slow Brain... I don’t really see Fred capable of that.

Full album shows of the (4) albums this lineup has put out would be my guess, two each night with a hits encore.

I’d LOVE to see that. Unfortunately if they advertised that, there’s no way it’d sell well. Same with S/T. I’d HIGHLY doubt they’re doing full album shows. If so, it’ll be TAYF for the millionth time.

when the vast majority of a bands fan base hates a record it usually isn’t a good record. you can go against the grain all you want. there are records by bands I Stan for that are considered subpar but I love, but I understand the reality of the general consensus. it should be exceedingly obvious there’s no “right” or “wrong” when judging music quality, I thought that was self evident. but all I said was, when everyone was talking about different factors that made new again under received, it seems to me the most obvious is that the songs just aren’t good and most fans (outside of this site anyway) would agree. feel free to disagree but you hold a minority opinion

But this scene specializes in hating good records just because they’re different. I don’t think NA is fantastic on the whole but I think it has aged well, much like somebody above said it would.

Scalding take: TBS are doing this straight rock thing better than thrice, and I liked TBEITBN quite a bit.

bringing up an entirely unrelated band just to put them down does little to back up your position

new again isnt even different. its just the sound they carved out on the previous two albums watered down to an absurd degree. but whatever. people will defend that album til they're blue in the face and that's fine and all but to act like people dont like new again just because its different is, frankly, ridiculous. even the band doesn't like the album. yeah the recording sessions were bad and there was inner turmoil during that time but they also probably realize the songs just aren't that good. they would know better than anyone whether or not they were at their creative best during that time. they weren't.
