Hilary swank's character is the worst in all the pre death scenes. Idk how old she is supposed to be in them but I'm getting messy first serious relationship when you're 19 vibes but I know she's supposed to be older

At least Lisa kudrow is here

  8. Due to some crazy life stuff, I've been absent from Chorus for a couple months. Catching up on threads as best I can. I'll just dump some recent opinions here about stuff I've watched recently.

Equalizer 2 and Ant-Man & The Wasp were ok. Incredibles 2 was great, and I'm so happy that a sequel made almost 15 years later was executed so well. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is truly mind-blowing. I watched half an hour of bts footage and b-roll and still can't believe the shit they pulled off. I just watched First Reformed the other day and found it to be compelling and deeply disturbing. It's surprisingly one of my favorites of the year so far. I need to check out more Paul Schrader movies, at least the stuff that's generally considered his best work.

It's been a good year for Asian/Asian-American visibility in entertainment from my perspective. Ali Wong's new special on Netflix is hilarious. I just saw Crazy Rich Asians yesterday and really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how emotional I got throughout. I'm half-Vietnamese and no parts Chinese, but I still related to some of the experiences and just seeing that story told on a big movie theater screen was meaningful. Also, To All The Boys I Loved Before on Netflix stars Lana Condor, a Vietnamese-American actress, in the lead role! I got around to watching Killing Eve, which is great and Sandra Oh is great. I also started watching a show that just got put on Netflix called Kim's Convenience, which is a light-hearted sitcom about a Korean family in Toronto. It's been like comfort food for me since I tend to watch a lot of grim stuff.

Speaking of grim, Sharp Objects on HBO has been very good. Can't wait for the finale tomo.

I've also been rediscovering my love of martial arts movies. The Drunken Master movies are incredible displays of Jackie Chan's superpowers, and decades later they're still great. Been re-watching the Ip Man movies and will probably watch The Raid movies again soon.

On the one hand, it is great that they are getting work, but it hurts the quality of a show that almost every Very Serious Television Drama uses the same actors in the second-tier roles. I just started watching the third season of the Americans and there have been two alumni from Oz (it feels like every show after Oz had an actor from Oz). They are almost always at least competent, but it feels like they are more comfortable casting known quantities rather than letting new actors get a chance. Combined with taking mid-level film actors and making them leads in the shows, it makes it harder to find new talent.

I can’t watch that because I’m at work, but I think it should be more “stop treating plot holes as a bigger deal than they are.”

It’s a great video that admits small logical inconsistencies in movies exist and sometimes can be annoying or noticeable, but they are so extremely rarely actually why movies are bad or don’t work. He’s right.

People who get hung up on plot holes annoy me as well. I'm sure there's been a time or two where something happens and it annoys me or someone makes a decision that I think is stupid, but I'm pretty positive it's never ruined a movie for me.

Using that clip from The Simpsons is the prefect summary of how dumb it can be to take plot holes seriously.

I’m also really over people behaving in irrational ways in movies being brought up as plot holes, especially if the character was under stress at the time.

To add onto this, I don't mean something like Gigli or The House Bunny or some shit like that. That would get old.

One example that I discussed a bit in some thread here recently was Sunshine and how I love the third act of the movie but it's generally considered a bad shift after the stellar first and second acts.

    Just a thought.
