Local venue screened Slave To The Grind last night and I was very impressed by how good of a documentary it was. Really gave me a new appreciation for the genre which I had kind of forgotten how to properly get down with. Sometimes I need a system refresh like that.

After that Closet Witch performed and they were fucking killer. I got to chat with the vocalist for a bit afterwards and she was a super nice person; she really inspired me to continue working on my own vocals - I doubt I'll ever be in a band, but seeing sets like that make me hope I do! They only played for about 25 minutes but it was worth every second.

I am now also, appropriately, on a grindcore kick.

I've never been able to get into much grindcore outside of Napalm Death and a few others. Someone help me.

Pig Destroyer might be a good start. I like pretty much all their work and each album has subtle differences so it never gets stale. I'd recommend Phantom Limb or Book Burner as good starting points.

Grindcore more than just about any sub-genre of metal you have to really be in the mood for.

    Did someone say grindcore?

I'll post a few of my favorites in addition the recommend starting with Pig Destroyer though I'd probably start with Prowler in the Yard if you can get past some of the inherit creepiness is possesses (Jennifer and Cheerleader Corpses haven't aged particularly well, IMO when compared against my values). Here we go (apologies if you've heard some of these before):

Misery Index - Traitors (deathgrind band out of Maryland - probably a good transition band in general as their songwriting is a bit more death metal influenced with a bit of grind's breakneck speed. Adam Jarvis is one of my favorite drummers in the genre. Anyway of their albums are probably a good starting point, but their later material leans ever harder on the death metal influence so I'll pick Traitors, their third album, as it's my favorite and a good blend of their earlier and later influences):

Insect Warfare - World Extermination (my favorite album by the band I'd probably say it my favorite grind band if someone put a gun to my head. It's the perfect mix of breakneck grind speed, occasional noise flourishes, indecipherable but still powerful vocals, and coherent as fuck grind riffs. RIP to the band cause they hung it up AFAIK after doing some brief reunion dates the last two years):

Dead in the Dirt - The Blind Hole (straight edge vegan atheist grind for pissed off assholes featuring members who also did or are currently doing time with Foundation (the hardcore band) and Infernal Coil (new Profound Lore signing). Has a bit more of a hardcore chassis than some of the other bands here, but throws in some nice Entombed-ish laden breakdowns and dual vocal flurries to make it a top five grind album of all time for me):

The Afternoon Gentlemen - S/T (From the straight edge grind band to a band who all of their material is about boozing and having a good time. The Afternoon Gentlemen are a great grind band out of the UK who write great riffs and have a diverse range of vocalists without getting too incoherent. There's just something about this album that really does it for me. I can't put my finger on it, but maybe it'll translate for you too?)

Death Toll 80k - Step Down (Just to throw a more recent release on here - Death Toll 80k is probably one of my favorite discoveries of this year. A fast, breakneck Finnish grind band with high and low vox that sounds like a metal rod getting stuck in a garbage disposal in the best way possible. Step Down is fucking awesome. Hopefully you'll enjoy it?):

Other bands to check out (no specific albums mentioned here because I'm on a bit of a time crunch - if you need specific recs, let me know!):
Carcass (their pre-Heartwork material is grade-A deathgrind that might be a good transitional listen)
General Surgery (legendary Swedish death/goregrind that's up your alley if you like Carcass)
    Repulsion (Horrified. That is all)
Terrorizer (World Downfall is a classic)
Wormrot (Singaporean grind masters. One of the best contemporary bands out there today)
Rotten Sound (Finnish grind legends with a great low-end driven grind sound)
    Nasum (groovy Swedish grind)
Full of Hell (not entirely grind, but they're also a good transitional band if you've never listened to them before)
Sick/Tired (my favorite local grind band out here in Chicago. I'd be remiss if I didn't give them a mention)
Weekend Nachos (Chicago's famous false grindcore band that leans a bit more into powerviolence and sludge territories at times)

Hopefully there's something new on here you can enjoy!

I already dig Misery Index and Carcass. Never really thought of Carcass as grind, but maybe that just means I actually like grind and didn't realize it ;-p

Thanks for all the other recs. I'll check them out as soon as I get some time.

Good job, Revolver Facebook comment section. You're just proving his point.

Incredibly jealous. Do you think there's any chance I could pay you to get me a shirt from Cold World? Maybe Power Trip depending on what they have. Think about it haha

It's months away but I'd be willing. Just hit me up when it gets closer to the show. I think it's November 10th if memory serves me correctly.

Cult Leader were my in to grindcore, as well, even though I was informed later that they're technically crust punk (if we're being genre pedants.)
Gridlink - Amber Grey and Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless are big time grind records for me.
That Dead In The Dirt record previously mentioned is also primo.

yeah they definitely have a ton of crust influence but they also carried a lot of the grind elements from gaza into cult leader

  17. #12 was great. Judging by the songs I go back to, I guess I was more into their tech/proggy elements (or however you categorize it) since I don't listen to much grind. Jon Karel is an unreal drummer.

I honestly haven't listened to much this year. Working on that.

I got nostalgic for Fellsilent today. Almost seems like a supergroup in retrospect. Members went on to do Monuments and Tesseract, and the singer ended up co-writing Zayn Malick's "Pillowtalk" haha. I still love this song.

Heard good things...it's in my queue for tomorrow. They're also doing a pretty extensive tour in December with Haunter.

  22. Fellsilent were great. It's a shame that they didn't stay together a little longer, as the djent trend became popular just a few years later. I always thought they had way more potential than their peers, as the Sikth influences put them above all those Periphery/Tesseract clones. No offense to those bands. They filled the void left by Sikth's hiatus.

I had to reread the part about the singer. It's randomly awesome!
