The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (November 30, 2018) Album • Page 232

  1. I'd be hard pressed to not say the band's in the mainstream right now. #1 albums, massive tours, every late night and magazine cover you can ask for, every single publication and writer has an opinion on them, massive fan base that follows their every word. Case could be made their one of the biggest rock bands in the world right now.

Agree with both of you in a sense. I've liked 2 of the 3 just fine. But i'm waiting for that banger from them.

Edit: I'm a big fan of the song. Just waiting for that one that makes me go "oh f*** yeah"

I get it. Give Yourself A Try is actually the one I like a lot, but I don't think anything has blown me away to the extent that it seems to have for others.

This song kicks ass. Sounds like pure joy... From the early descriptions of tracks in interviews, I'm most excited to hear "It's Not Living, If It's Not With You" considering it's been described as both "Springsteen" and "The Psychedelic Furs".

I think what I mean more than anything is more radio exposure. They’re like the top tier of the second tier if that makes any sense. It’s if they couldn’t get any bigger without being on the popularity level as any A list pop artist out there. Difference is these boys are insanely talented.

  6. But does the mainstream really listen to the radio that much? Let alone music radio? All the numbers for Top 40 and stuff seem to be down every year. A big playlist spot is probably more valuable these days to a band's success.

That's like ... a handful of maybe 5 or 6 people though. I think that's a different level of celebrity vs mainstream artist. These guys are at the "parents know who they are if their kids are into music" level. That's big.

I'm the wrong person to talk about that with. I think to get to the level of A-List Pop you have to be insanely talented and that those that see that level of success, by and large, are exactly that.

Alright this song was stuck in my head while I was listening to Grand Paradise by Foxing, which has been doing that to every other song I’ve tried to listen to in the past week, so what I’m trying to say is WOW WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT.

You make all fair points. Maybe it’s the fan boy in me that just wants them to be as large as humanly possible. They encompass everything i’ve ever wanted in a band since I was young. They blend almost every genre i’ve ever cared about and they do it so incredibly well.

As great as these songs sound it bums me out that they'll eventually just be boring old songs. My attention span will be the death of me. I'm so glad we're getting two albums from this band.

So how do you look up videos on spotify? I only ever can listen to the song, never find the video.

I get where you're coming from @Kyle Max. Personally I think they might be about as big as they can possibly get in the UK at this point... but in the US I still think this could be the album to get them significantly more into the "mainstream" than they are currently. It's interesting that there's still that real divide sometimes between how popular a major artist/band is here versus in the UK, but I definitely think it's the case here... it seems like in the UK they're basically ubiquitous, but in my possibly useless anecdotal experience they're big here in the States, but not quite that same level *YET*.

It is kind of wild how sometimes a band can be so massive in the UK with a only a moderately large fanbase in the US. I always assumed that if anything ever happened to the Queen, that Oasis was next in line for the throne.

  19. Imagine thinking this.

I shudder at the thought. Their music library must suuuuuuck.

  20. Uh, that has happened. Matty is the new Pete Wentz circa 2005.

i think we will know just how big they are when the next US tour is announced. venue size and how much they're filling these venues will give a good judge especially coming off the album release. prediction: arenas in all markets, not necessarily completely selling out everywhere

I’m loving this new album era a lot more than the last one for sure. All the songs so far are jams and I completely agree Matty is the Pete Wentz of today in the scene.

People are going to act like "TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME" is a tropical house song, but this is actually just like if "The Sound" had been stripped of all rock elements.
