i mean i can go into more detail haha but it really doesn't seem like you're gonna hear any of it. you're welcome to say anything of validity or substance in favor of GTA V's story if you want to. least im not out here writing 1-2 word posts dawg

There's very little I hate as much as the phrase (or any varient of) "is this the hill you want to die on?"

 

I just started playing GTA V for the first time.

Oh no, it wasn't you personally saying it. It just seems like such a "buzz word/phrase" and an extreme one at that.

 

I returned GTAV the day after I bought it and regret nothing.

I think the narrative is fine for what it is trying to emulate. It’s great, but I mean it’s a video games ;D I disagree with that the satire doesn’t work, it’s just that the good stuff isn’t necessarily in the story but incorporated into the world. Overall I’d also say the story is at least occasionally gripping.

 

honestly outside of my meta/ethical criticisms of the narrative (considering, for instance, the torture minigame, that's a pretty significant exception, mind you) - the whole middle section, where it's just heist after heist stitched together with each one prompting a character saying, "no, THIS is the last job!" is like a classic Michael Mann scenes YouTube compilation, but extremely boring and slow

 

although, paradoxically - the heists often do a pretty good job of setting up tension. ie, the best parts of Michael Mann heist scenes. it's messy.

 

I don’t disagree with that those parts are slow. The narrative definitely drags on for too long. I do think the feeling of being in that world, especially in the current gen versions, is still close to unparalleled.

And yeah that torture scene is bad.

yeah, the world design is really quality. i think its scope gets a little unwieldy at times for the narrative itself - sometimes i'd be driving for ten minutes wishing rockstar had given me enough dialogue for 20% of that ride - but it's really, really fucking insane and (I assume) compelling for multiplayer and free roam. i think open world bloat is a real problem, because it's becoming the only way we know how to value games, but as far as worlds go, it's actually jaw dropping to see the tech and talent that went into it. we always can roam it consistently (limited invisible walls, smooth animations on foot and range of vehicles used, diverse but also realistic and gradient if that makes sense); it's highly detailed (particularly in first person, part of what's so incredible about that port); and it's smoothly streamed (ignoring, reasonably, when we switch characters, we get a brief loading screen).

like, i'm not even trying to be a shit here - reading about the development of GTA V from a tech/design standpoint is possibly more interesting to me than playing through it itself. i wish i could fully appreciate the coding and design that went into it.

yea, the torture minigame was a really clear microcosm of what i think GTA doesn't understand about itself: that it is a powerful cultural institution, and that it, itself, makes assumptions (sometimes harmful, wrong, unjustifiable), and sometimes, over the top really doesn't have that much to say.

 

That video was so bad. He also never really apologizes for the plagiarism.
