am i missing something here? there's some similarities but aside from the "fast and fluid" thing none of them seem that egregious, they're ultimately talking about the same game. there are moments when their words match up pretty well but they tend to be when talking about game mechanics that any review is gonna have to cover anyways. idk i guess i just dont care much about discourse related to video game media so this doesn't feel like that big a deal to me.

    Some other examples:

Boomstick Gaming: In most games of this genre, your coolest skills and spells are often set to strictly long recharge timers or a limited mana system, but in Dead Cells, your abilities have incredibly quick recharges and allow you to seamlessly integrate these gadgets in normal encounters and it doesn’t make you feel penalized for using your cool stuff.

Filip Miucin: Most games limit your most useful skills with long cool-down timers or a limited mana system, but Dead Cells encourages you to use your deadliest gadgets with a fast recharge timer. It never punishes you for using your best tactics.

Boomstick: Dead Cells only falters slightly with some repetition setting in, especially on the early areas and during longer play sessions.

Miucin: Dead Cells does falter slightly with some repetition but it’s only felt in its earlier areas and during extended play sessions.

Boomstick: Dead Cells figures out an intriguing way to have your rogue-like and Metroidvania experience all in one by focusing on your failures and encouraging you to try something new the next time.

Miucin: Dead Cells strikes a perfect and engaging balance between the Metroidvania and rogue-like experiences by focusing on your failures and urging you to experiment every time you do fail.

    seems pretty intentional to me

It doesn't matter that it's video game related. It's journalism in general. It's a blatant and egregious copy of someone else's work and using it as your own. The structure of the review is exactly the same and so is the pacing, delivery and points he made. He took someone else's work, did the high school equivalent of copying someone's homework and thought he could get away with it.

Is it as bad as taking it exactly word for word? Of course not, but it casts all of IGN in a bad light for allowing this to happen and says they are okay with taking someone's hard work and making it their own.

That being said, I heard that IGN is looking into the matter and will act accordingly.

hmm... some of those are pretty noticeable tbh. but i will say that first one doesn't seem like that big a deal, seems like two people played the same game and both came to the conclusion that a positive aspect of the game was a fast recharge timer for abilities, like what it the ign guy supposed to do? not talk about because some youtuber already said something similar? i guarantee that if this wasnt a story on mutliple game sites, that someone on this thread would have said something similar. i dont think that implies they watched boomstick's review and regurgitated his thoughts, just that it's something the developers put in the game with the hopes that people would notice it and enjoy it. more than plagiarism this strikes me as unorginilaity in the way people talk about games, specially games that everyone expects to be praised.

that being said it is really fishy given the other really obvious similarities and ign made a good call pulling the review and looking into the matter.

There are a plethora of ways to approach a review including but not limited to how you: describe a game, inject your personal viewpoints and connections, add your own voice and create your own tone. This was a cheap copy of someone else's work.

It's like if you had an Elmo doll for sale and instead of him being red he was purple, but his voice, words and look were otherwise the same.

at least based on the video of the guy who made the original video it really doesn't seem that serious. he compares a series of lines that just point aspects of the game that any writer might eventually cover when talking about this game. like the one about mutations, that's just two people covering the same mechanic from the same game, how is that one person copying the other? even the thing about it being "fast, fluid, and responsive" is more indicative of video game critics just using the same words because coverage is unoriginal in general.

im not doubting you all, but tbh this boomstick guy does a terrible case for himself in that video (which is what i watched when curious on the situation), you all make a better case for him than he does.

yeah that's true, but so little of the coverage on this is centered on how the video is structured or how little the ign guy does to separate his own delivery and pacing from the other. it's all so centered on "this guy said this and the review also says this", which on its own doesnt hold up to that much scrutiny. i think boomstick did himself a disservice by taking that angle.

The guy has said himself he just wants clarification or for proper action to be taken. He's being really nice about it which is more than what I would be doing. I'd be questioning IGN's integrity as journalists, but then again to my knowledge Filip is the only one being caught up in this and all the other members of staff seem completely unaware that it was plagiarized.

I mean the REAL crime here is that IGN still has William Bibbiani doing movie reviews because that guy is absolutely awful.

The funniest thing is, kind of what Jim said but, how did the dude think he would get away with that? The channel in question he copied from isn't even like, some sub 100 subscriber channel.....it had a solid 10k or so before this incident I think and had a video with over a million views, plus routinely got like, 20k views for videos. It was somewhat getting established!

The one good thing is that that channel is definitely gonna blow up more and get subscribers now thanks to the attention of this.
