It’s absolutely insane anyone is using Roseanne as an example of how we have to “be careful” of where we “draw the line” because what she said so obviously deserved to end in her being fired. Like if one of your coworkers said that you wouldn’t tell your manager? If one of your employees said that you’d keep them around? Fuck off youre a horrible person

Like her whole tv show reboot was full of racism and it’s not like she accidentally missused a term or made an honest mistake she was viciously racist. Like when people talk about call out culture I feel like there’s such a misunderstanding because largely successful and privileged public figures are rarely effected by it except some “mean” things said on social media. It targets not quite as high profile public figures who are usually marginalized in some way. Even in terms of this brendon interview, when the discussion of the term pansexual went around in regards to this some people were mean but most were trying to educate or defend him depending on where they stand meanwhile I saw people trying to cancel janelle monae for saying she was (and if I’m remembering correctly she said she was okay with either bi or pan) which makes you think who are the actual people effected by this. Because all these people that are apparently at such a risk of losing their careers are either really not or did something extremely horrific. And let’s be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Roseanne gets a talk show or something in a year and a half lol.

That was probably an unnecessary long answer I’m sorry haha

Brendan strikes me as a talented person who’s either incredibly dim or has been so isolated by money/fame that he doesn’t bother to look into certain issues before speaking on them. Like when he called Fiona Apple a bitch because she didn’t clear a sample for him.

Any person that gave Roseanne’s twitter account a passing glance would see it was drowning in racist conspiracy theories. Of course she deserved to lose her show. “Both sides”-ing it is so dumb.

brendon strikes me as a rich celeb who doesnt want to pick a side because his conservative fans will stop buying music and concert tickets and merch

    Things have changed.

Which is why he frequently talks about how evil Trump and why homophobia is terrible, supported the March for Our Lives, and celebrates LGBT icons with videos during his shows?

Cigarettes After Sex is getting a lot of buzz lately around their new singles and being featured in shows after the groping accusation last fall went nowhere I guess

  9. This thing with Urie - while disappointing as all hell, and that letter was... fascinating (unsure how I missed it back in the day, but here we are - probably isn't that deep. Just looks like un-examined white privilege to me, which makes a white celebrity saying something like that despite being ~progressive~ in other areas or a member of other marginalized communities just another day ending in "y".

And not for nothing, but the dude likely has friends who have or could be "cancelled" if the wrong (or right) person talked. Pretty much everyone does. Folks just show themselves when they present spicy hot takes like that one.

I feel like Brendon tries to come off way more sophisticated than he really is. Like, he's always trying to say something deep or philosophical but it comes off cringe-worthy. He does a lot of Instagram Live videos where he'll do Q&As with his fans and the answers are often really over the top and over-dramatic. That's not to excuse what he has said or done in the past, but I feel like he shoots off from the hip and maybe doesn't really think about what he's actually saying a lot of the time.

yeah the reality is, white cis dudes are still very frequently not the greatest allies despite being queer. it's easy to be vocal when injustice directly affects you (which isn't to discount the importance of doing so), but for instance orgs like HRC can still be real slow to move towards anti-racist, anti-classist, anti-sexist initiatives because when you're a rich white gay dude that still leaves the potential for a lot of unchallenged blind spots

So how do you reconcile that against his open atheism and outspoken stances against homophobia, Trump, gun violence and the Westboro Baptist Church? His partnership with GLSEN that he gave $1 million to? Donations to Planned Parenthood and HRC?

An absolutely honest question, because to me that doesn't sound like someone petrified of losing conservative fans.

So should he get a cookie for doing some average decent things? Aside from the donations of course, we need more celebrities putting their money down for notable causes.

I don’t think he’s petrified of his conservative fans. I think he does some great things for marginalized people. But I also think that he’s misinformed and speaks without knowing much about the subject.

Like, he drew a line connecting football players that kneel against police brutality to Roseanne, who tweets racist bullshit. There’s no comparison, but he wants to “both sides” it. No matter how many donations he makes or speeches he says, that gives a thumbs up to the right wing.

  19. cricketandclover

    Things have changed.

Being misinformed and purposely not taking sides so you can sell more tickets are two VERY different things.

Heaven help us all if a bad answer in an interview negates years and a million-plus dollars spent trying to do the right thing and stand up for unfairly marginalized people.

This doesn’t really strike me as that odd.

People who have obtained wealth, power, celebrity, and privilege are terrified of that being taken away from them.

Of course he identifies with Roseanne in that situation.

He can be “woke as hell,” but, at the end of the day, he is still a wealthy individual who wants to maintain that status and, therefore, looks down upon anything that could take it away.

No need to get hostile. I’m not saying cancel him. I’m saying that comparing support for football players kneeling and saying Roseanne should be fired as lefties being bad people is dumb as hell and comes off as a millionaire dude feeling bad for another millionaire for losing their job and not considering the circumstances.

him being careful with his wording so as not to alienate fans is probably completely 100% subconscious, especially if hes consciously railing against trump in concert. but his answer to that interview question is reprehensible. using football players kneeling to protest police brutality as a comparison to roseanne being wildly and overtly racist is so brain dead stupid i find it hard to believe it even came out of his mouth. im a queer male, if the queer males with a platform are gonna be saying shit like this then fuck them. i dont want a queer role model who speaks like this on issues of race.

the LGBQT+ community has an extremely troubled history (as well as in the present) with racism. brendon's shit isn't helping.

Taylor Swift, while I love her, is the prime example of not taking a side to keep getting money from conservatives. Brendon is just a dumbass. Sometimes it’s not super deep- people just are racist or whatever-ist more than not because they’re born into a society that ingrains it in them.

Tbh brendon got famous young and he seems a bit theater kidish so he's prob just kinda dumb and annoying/over the top sometimes. I feel like its not rare for people who got famous young to be kinda... out of touch on things. I'm sure he means well but hopefully if fans call him out on his bs he'll listen idk much about him past the fangirl days ooop
