It's possible that they didn't like it because it's too dark and gritty. Maybe it's not kid friendly enough. we'll see i guess. I trust disney isn't stupid and won't screw this up.

Ugh why does everything have to be "fun". I mean didn't they want this to be like a WWII film in tone?

  6. Cause Batman v Superman got destroyed.

    Haha. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Haha I hate that. My problems with that movie didn't stem from being too serious... Dark Knight Was serious. Batman V Superman sucked because Zack Snyder doesn't have a clue how to portray Superman. Henry Cavill can be super charismatic... Who would know after Batman vs Superman? Add in the fact that whoever edited the damn thing didn't know what they were doing..

i just hope that the tone isn't changed too much. I loved the trailer and loved the tone of it.

I think the Dark Knight is very fun. Fun and serious aren't mutually exclusive, you can imbibe action with excitement and fun and well-developed characters can be multi-faceted, Morgan Freeman/Michael Caine/even Christian Bale had moments of brevity. Hell, the Joker had a bunch of great jokes/comedic physicality.

Plus, these movies are all-ages movies with a huge market of children. An overly-serious movie would not be good for that very sizable piece of the audience. Now, I don't necessarily think Star Wars should only be light and fun, but it certainly makes sense that if Disney thinks the film is overly serious, that could be a conflict with their vision for the property.

  11. I think I was more hoping that the "one off" movies could be unique, or different, because the main story would be the ones that had to adhere to a specific tone. I guess I'm a tad bummed that instead we should expect a Marvelization of Star Wars. Don't take risks. Don't step outside the Mouse. Be vanilla, get that cheddar.

Exactly. I don't want these marvelized at all, where everything is indistinguishable from each other.

Such a bummer. I was really hoping that expanding the universe would allow talented directors with unique voices to put their stamp on the universe. Now it sounds like Disney just wants to protect the brand, similar to Marvel. Doesn't mean the movies will necessarily be bad, but still not what I was hoping for.

Edit: Aaaand reading down the thread, just noticed you said pretty much the same thing.

This might be an unintended side effect of shared universes and never-ending franchises. They can't go that dark or heavy because it would change the status quo, and they need that status quo to build more movies off of. That's one of Civil War's biggest flaws, it might bleed over to Star Wars.

They took a huge risk at acquiring Star Wars and reinvigorating the life into the franchise, and are also the first to try a spin off series from the main cash cow series. Making sure it's not a commercial failure after less than spectacular screenings isn't a stupid move imo.

  16. I'd make the argument what they spent on Lucasfilm was not a risk.

I was kinda of hoping for more of a "war" movie moreso than previous Star Wars. They're supposed to be fighting the Empire at a time when they're at their most desperate and dire right? I would expect a few heavier themes, like self-sacrifice, the cost of war, is all the death worth it yadda yadda. Too bad we will likely never see this original version without the te shoots.

$4b for lucasfilm was a surefire home run. disney have taken shits with more risk involved.

yeah that's what i heard a few days back.

I don't know, it could still be that. War movies have moments of levity just like any other movie. Latest rumors point to reshooting with the purpose of adding a character cameo, maybe Han Solo.

One of the downsides of shared cinematic universes is that they have to have a somewhat consistent look and feel.

As cool as it would be to have some kind of Star Wars murder mystery noir movie or a Star Wars political espionage movie, they all still need to look and feel like Star Wars movies.

A Han Solo cameo makes zero sense. This is what a few months a year at most before the events of A New Hope?

Not that I am a fan of the young Han Solo spinoff concept but I don't know why him having a cameo doesn't make sense, especially considering we don't know what the plot thread of the movie even is.

Please no Han Solo cameo. It's already far fetched that in an entire galaxy spanning millions of planets, everyone seems to be unknowingly related. We don't need anybody 'randomly' bumping into Han Solo.

  24. maybe it's something where Han and whoever are on the same planet trying to escape from the Empire, help each other out, then go on their separate ways

I feel like it was probably a stretch to have Harrison return for TFA. I don't see him doing a cameo no matter how much money they offer, he seems over the role.
