No, but being a student is almost like having a full time job and it’s a very expensive investment in your future and should be treated as such. College is just as important in teaching and instilling life long responsibiltu as it is about showing up to class. I haven’t responded cause I’ve yet to listen to it, I will tonight though. Again though, I won’t comment on the video yet, but it already seems like it’s just an extremely minuscule situation that you’re throwing at me to try to discredit my views and opinions (see: grasping at straws). I really do appreciate the civility that’s been shown overall tonight though. I know I have differing opinions and views from a lot of you and it might not be easy to not just flat out call me a fucking idiot, etc. but I don’t want to come off as someone who is just trolling or poking the bear. I mostly come into this forum to read and learn than I do to argue a stance. Ive have had many opionions changed and/or formed over the years since ap.net to now from the great minds of many users.

  3. The point is that Rubin constantly chooses to have awful people on his show and let them say awful things without rebuffing even obvious lies and anti-semitism but also claims to be "unbiased"

I wanna give you specific comparisons so as to not anger those that are just drooling to zing or fault me (not talking about you), so I’ll have to research a little bit. But I think a general comparison for starters (this is nothing new) is what cartoons can get away with joking about that people would be shamed for saying in person. Mmm, Dave Chappell says a lot of things in his newer stand ups that would be career enders for others making the joke. Again, I’ll find specifics but I feel like some can make Trans jokes and rape jokes and everyone’s fine with it (which is normal, cause.. it’s comedy) and then if someone says it on just a wrong day, they’re shamed and ridiculed and called all kinds of phobias. I see that kind of crap happening all the time

Sure. I hope you have the time to thoroughly read through and watch what I linked, it may help. I'd like to know what you think after that.

Do you think this is the only example? Before we give you more, how many do you need to make you question the quality of these people and what they do?
Which part of rape is funny? Do you want to ask my girlfriend which part of her rape was funny?

As for the world of comedy, I can't comment on who says what and when cause I don't really follow that stuff unless it's in the news/making headlines etc.

Also I would like to know the context of these "rape and trans jokes" - this already sounds bad just saying that.. But who's saying them that is getting away with it, and what exactly is the content?

I just don't think you have to make jokes based on abuse and/or one's marginalized identity, and it's always much worse when it's coming from those who are not the people they're talking about.

It is usually more offensive than not. It's not being a snowflake. It's being reasonable and respectable, and not enabling bigotry or trivializing of traumatic experiences.

She said no part of it was funny.

    Edit: Not even in hindsight.

Definitely more than one, so please,
Bombard me with them. And come on, you do know that people can and do Joke about issues that aren’t funny went separated, you’re surely not that dumb, can’t be. So stop playing it. The only question I would have for her is making sure she’s still not with that person and that she is getting the help and support she needs. But I have a feeling it’s a no yes in that order

  14. The problem with comedians that get shit on for bad jokes ... is they’re bad at making the jokes. They’re shitty and offensive and not good jokes. That’s the issue, not “political correctness.”

This is a really poor argument without very specific examples, and a lot of them. Its circumstantial, subjective, and entirely lacking context. But you're positioning it as something very important to you. If you have examples I'd love to see them and articulate the differences and reactions, but even then, it would never be something I'd consider material in my life. If anything its raising the bar higher for comedy and removing people spreading toxic ideas from that particular scene. And that's if its a thing that is actually occurring in high numbers, which I very much have doubts on.

And more importantly, why is this an issue that bothers you so much?

Cause it goes back to what I was initially talking about, censorship, judging, etc. it’s all in the last few pages or so

Anywho, it’s been a few hours of debating, and at night is when the drinkers start lurking the threads so I want to avoid that dragon. I’m pooped and have lots of new material to read up on. Thanks again for the time.

Its not censorship to dislike someone's joke. If someone is bad at making jokes and they get less work they aren't censored, they're failing at comedy. Its not the fault of the audience, its on them. And there are thousands of failing comics out there who don't blame others for their failure, they get better at making jokes.

And judgement in this context is absolutely acceptable. If someone makes you a bad sandwich you don't just eat it and then continue visiting that sandwich place forever because you don't want to judge. You complain, get your money back, or at least don't go back to the bad sandwich place. And they go out of business, or provide a service they actually want. Comedians are providing a service. They either provide a good service, or they don't find an audience, and they go out of business.

If you want to tell jokes on controversial subject matter you are on a higher difficulty already. But you are not owed an audience, you are not owed opportunities, you are not owed a career because you want to tell controversial jokes. Those jokes have to be good, unique, from a perspective that doesn't attack victims of terrible trauma (audiences tend to dislike that kind of thing, go figure), and also, like, funny. And even then you have to work incredibly hard to get heard and get better and be better than the thousands of other people working their asses off every day to make it in a very cutthroat profession that very few people find success in.

Failing is the most likely outcome, and it has nothing to do with judgement or censorship, it has so much to do with entitlement, laziness, and just not being good enough or wanting to work hard enough, but thinking the world owes you this thing and its someone else's fault you suck at it.

Anyway, I would love to see those examples. Your argument absolutely hinges on providing some really salient real-world examples.

Censorship? They can tell all the rape jokes they want. But that doesn't mean thier aren't consequences.
