Midway Report:

I’m enjoying this so far. It’s not a movie that I intentionally avoided, I just never got around to seeing it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin. And I like that it’s a pretty fresh take on superhero movies. The scenes where he breaks the fourth wall take a little getting used to. I also like how it goes back and forth between past and present.

Time to get another drink and finish this up!

 

What an excellent choice. Best way obvi is to just watch games. You’ll get a feel for which teams are playing better by how well they control the ball, how many passes they complete, if they’re shooting often, etc.

as for rooting for teams: underdog status, big names, jersey design, etc

roles: defense, midfield, offense. This’ll seem pretty blurry as teams try out lots of different, seemingly insignificant, variations, so don’t worry about it too much. I’ve been playing most of my life and it can still seem like a mess on TV.

recognition: not exactly sure what you’re referring to but I think the flow of the game lends itself well to learning. There aren’t a lot of stoppages or weird rules and they now do some video replays of fouls and goals and whatnot so that should help. only major thing to recognize is when a player is fouled, their team gets a free kick. Cool goals often ensue.

It seems peoples’ biggest hurdle is overcoming the relative lack of scoring. Then again we live in a world where people watch golf so I don’t get it. My heavy bias is that soccer goals are far and away the most aesthetically pleasing score in sports so that’s enough for me. My only other suggestion is to just try to appreciate the buildup and how difficult it is.

Lastly, players dive/fake getting fouled. Probably the only sport where this happens with any regularity. It’s hard to watch and annoying as hell but they’ve gotten better about it as it’s now punishable.

thanks so much for taking the time write all of this! my friend is a big Atlanta United fan so I wanted to try and get into it so she could have someone to talk about it with. that coupled with the real excitement everyone had over the fifa game at work today made it seem like it'd be cool. I'm gonna try and see if I can find either an old recording of a game or tune into the next one so I can attempt to apply these things
