Titanic is great, Avatar is an average movie that pushed visual boundaries beautifully even if the impact it had on other movies was regrettable, and I'm not big on the Force Awakens at all but I'm less big on this movie about the mean purple man

  2. I love both TFA and IW. Avatar is a great technological achievement, but I'll probably never sit down and watch that entire movie again. I haven't watched Titanic in a long time, but I'm pretty sure it's just not for me. It's funny, James Cameron's movies are likely the more influential movies, but I'd prefer to watch the other two.

It doesn’t look like this will pass Black Panther domestically. Another ~$40 million seems like a pretty tall order, but it will def pass Titanic heh. Just crazy how big BP has been, will be really interesting to see how A4 will do next year.

I doubt A4 will pass Black Panther domestically. There is too much competition in the Summer for a film to make a lot of money domestically. If Infinity War or A4 would release in December-February they would beat Black Panther, but I don’t see it happening in the Summer season.

Titanic is the best disaster movie of all time. Avatar was a visual breakthrough.

The other two are just episodes of mega franchises. I liked infinity war but it's not a special movie

I can't imagine that Avengers 4 won't make the top of the list

A4 won’t beat Avatar at the box office but becoming #2 is possible. Marvel/Disney will probably try to get it to release in China during its opening weekend so that it can beat Infinity War.

I think Titanic and TFA might be the biggest event movies I can remember. It’s crazy how big the hype was leading up to both of them.

I also wouldn’t mind movies that long (titanic that is) brought back intermissions.

I was only six when it came out, but I remember there being so much hype around it.

  13. I remember the hype when Titanic was out and my relatives all going crazy over it. I'd love to learn about how hype prior to movies worked back then.

Funny how all of those movies are extremely unremarkable outside of the visuals/aesthetics of them (which are pretty much a direct result of the monstrous budgets they all had) and have only really had any sort of long-term impact on both films and culture at-large in the form of parodies / memes about them

I guess Avatar started the most recent wave of adding shit 3D to every other film, but that’s definitely been a net negative

The MCU, as well as Infinity War, has and will continue to have a lasting impact on films and culture. Look at how many studios have been making shared cinematic universes lately due to the success of the MCU.

??? Which, exactly, besides the DC films? I would hardly consider stuff like Star Wars or
X-Men to be doing the same thing as the MCU

Plus, I was speaking of Infinity War specifically. It’s not exactly some new development in the cinematic universe concept.

Weird, I don’t recall saying anything about fun

The MonsterVerse featuring Godzilla, King Kong, etc. The Dark Universe featuring Universal Monsters. TOHO films even announced a cinematic universe starting in 2021 and directly credited the MCU as inspiration.

Its so weird that TOHO credits Marvel even though they've been doing it for 60+ years.

Isn’t TOHO, like, essentially the same thing as the “MonsterVerse”?

And still, again, I was talking about IW, not the entire MCU.

Titanic is way more than its visuals. It’s a tragedy about class and wealth inequality that uses an archetypical romance and absolutely stunning visuals to bring the evil of the class divide to the forefront. It’s easily the best of the $2 billion movies because it’s actually about something.

WB/Legendary currently own the rights to Godzilla. In 2020, the rights revert to TOHO. They are planning on going back to the traditional style of Godzilla film at that point. We'll probably see stuff like Rodan, Gamera, Ultraman.

Avatar, the Force Awakens, and Infinity War. Not adjusted for inflation.

I dunno, post just kinda came off dismissive from a tonal sense. It just seems like a poor argument either way to me. People have made their comments about Titanic better than I would, so I'll leave that one. Don't care about Avatar personally.

Films like IW and Force Awakens though exist on a rare corner between nostalgia and "actually good" on their own. Plus I would be inclined to argue that these types of stories have a positive impact on a societal level because hero stories are applicable to kids and adults alike. I don't think either is unremarkable and I think both introduced new and interesting things both to their own canons and "nerdy movies." They're definitely more than just aesthetic and production.
