The implacableness of the films time frame is another manifestation of how grief and trauma can consume you.

Doesn’t Paimon grant foresight and infinite knowledge or whatever? I’m sure the group could probably use that to their advantage in regards to killing Charlie.

I just assumed it's a curse, they don't actually need to plan out the events that would lead to her dying the way she did. sort of like that saying God works in mysterious ways but instead it's the devil/demons manipulating events

In a film that contains hell and Paemon and spirits and seances and levitating headless corpses, I can suspend my disbelief enough to believe they were able to make him kill Charlie by mistake.

The cult symbol being on the telephone pole was a definite indicator of how it was all planned

Speaking of the floating headless body, I've seen people say it was cheesy or that it took them out of the movie. I didn't get that vibe at all. I thought it was one of the most unsettling visuals of the movie. It felt surreal and Lynch-ian to me.

Yea I think it was stuff like this that made one of the groups in my theater not like the movie with how they were talking about it as I left. But I think they played it well and definitely unsettling; that's the word I would describe this movie the most as rather than just scary.

The only part I thought was goofy was when the mom scurries out of the sons room behind his back.

there is so much shit I missed, this is wild. Can't wait to pick up on all the foreshadowing I missed. The symbol on the pole, etc

I'm still tripping over the fact that I didn't recognize it being Charlie's head on the statue at the end.

I wish I could draw because I have a crystal clear image in my head of what I "thought" I saw when watching the movie. I specifically remembering thinking it was an interesting choice to have that type of head on the statue and at no point, until this thread, the idea that it was her head even entered my brain. I legitimately believed it was a gold, blank-face Jesus-like head.

The hair looked remarkably like Jesus’s which was a pretty crazy touch to pull off naturally. I would never have thought that a decaying child’s head could look so Christlike but somehow they pulled it off. It certainly took a while for most of my crowd to pick it up, I was hearing murmurs for the whole shot. And the rest of the body and crown were blank gold if I’m remembering correctly, so maybe you took it from that.

Wild. Just wild. I have no clue how I could have missed this. I'm trying to find a picture of the type of face that I recognized when I was watching it.

Realizing that was Charlie’s head on the statue is the one thing from this movie that messed me up the most.

I think mine was the closeup of her head on the side of the road while her mom is still screaming from the previous scene

Yeah I was already sobbing hysterically at the scene with her grief and that lingering look just messed me up. Definitely one of the most emotional sequences I've ever seen in a film. Honestly the image of her in the fetal/prostrate position being comforted is one of the visuals that has burned into my brain the most, along with the head shots.

This movie is one that the longer I've sat with it thinking after seeing it, the better it is in my head. Really really cool.

saw an interview with the director where he said the first images he had for the film were Charlie's head being knocked off and Annie cutting off her own head. thought that was pretty interesting

you're in a cult, call your dad

This was the point that the movie just really all clicked together for me. It was so truly demented and visceral and over-the-top without feeling ridiculous for the sake of "shock value." That is a VERY rare thing to accomplish, I think.
