I'm confused how people praise Pablo but criticize this album for "first draft lyrics," when most of Pablo is just filled with mumbles and grunts cuz he couldn't finish writing the lyrics. Like Ultralight Beam and Wolves are amazing songs that are ruined by him just....mumbling. Now that was lazy and unfinished in my opinion.

Also I'm not trying to single out kbeef's comment specifically but I thought "first draft lyrics" was a good way to sum up the criticism I've been seeing and hearing.

I asked because I was interested in discussing the record from the other side. People are allowed to like the album. I never demanded anything. I was genuinely curious because I feel we've mostly heard why people dislike it. Don't think it's that weird.

I also think people are allowed to shit-post in album threads about artists they've been disappointed by. There's no wrong way to react to art (especially problematic art) unless it's harmful to others

    I agree with yr post

you can shit post all you want, it’s just weird what happened here... maybe because Kanye is so popular and expectations were really high profile, I guess

second part I 100% agree, although I’m trying to think of a harmful reaction to art - not contentious, just wondering if you could give an example

    hey you lil piss baby

I don't think shit-posting is inherently harmful, but it may spur feelings of shame, etc. in those who may be using this album as a place of solace. I just don't understand people and their fixation on things they don't like, what's the point?

I feel like the behavior in this thread directly mirrors what people complain about in threads for artists that they like though.

The best part about this album is seeing someone recommend Natalie Prass in this thread. Damn this album is funky

A harmful reaction to art would probably be being shitty to non-fans/fans, however you want to take that.

I don't think the Trump shit is making people not like the record, I think the Trump shit is making people be harsher in their reactions. If you think it's choppy or poorly made/produced, then that's a fair opinion, but Kanye himself said this was a quickly made, kind of "steam of conscious" type project. You are free to dislike it, but to disparage it because of it's rushed-ness, or to compare it to albums he spent years crafting, seems a little off base.

I really like the record. Some songs get a little to Haim-y. “Lost” and “Oh My” are superb.

oh, ok - got it and agree

  14. I don't think it's off base to disparage it for that reason. He didn't have to release it on June 1, he could have delayed it and spent more time working on it. Just because he made the choice to make it in a few weeks and release it half-finished doesn't mean I have to respect that choice. I think it's worth critiquing it when the final product so clearly pales in comparison to all of his other work.

Honestly at this point I'm just tired. I just don't like the album on any front, cool for people that can like it.

This is not a good album. It’s hastily thrown together and unfinished. Some songs have pieces of what could have been much better songs

I think you're missing my point. He chose to do it this way because it wanted to do something DIFFERENT. It's supposed to be include the flaws. It's not supposed to be polished. If you think that's the wrong way to create art, and think he should have spent more time on it, and therefore want to critique it for being the way it is, I guess that's your choice.

Just seems like this isn't a "Kanye album" per-se. It's more of an experiment. Kind of like how TLOP is "ever-changing." He's trying different things and forcing himself to create under a deadline without putting much thought into it is one of those different things.

If you find it to be a failure, once again, that's your opinion. Just think you should take it into consideration when comparing it to "Fantasy" or something where he spent years and had tons of collaborators working with him/tweaking stuff.

This is a fair assessment. At least you're hearing/seeing potential and not just calling it bad.

My point is just that this is what it looks when Kanye throws together a song a day for a week. He's got potential, but he's not an improviser by nature. Dude needs time to work.

To me that sounds more like making excuses for it but hey if that's how you feel

This is silly and a cop-out. I saw it used a ton with TLOP too. A half baked album is a half baked album, regardless of intent

  22. Nah b I get your point, but I think you're missing the point of critical discourse. If he really did made an artistic choice to release an unfinished album full of flaws as a stream of conscious thing or whatever (which I don't believe but I'll go with it), then that's where I'm meeting him. I come out thinking that it was a bad choice that made for a bad project. Artists make all kinds of choices that have consequences on the final product and in this case, in my assessment, that "choice" was a bad one.

If people like this album then power to them. I don't, some of my friends do. But the idea that we don't like it because none of us are being fair about it or understanding the artistic choices fully is something I disagree with.

I’ll be the first to say few things compare to AW and this is definitely not one of those few things - not even close
