I obviously like the album. I also really enjoyed that review. It’s his worst record but I still find it interesting. That’s about where I’m at on it. Back to FJM.

I'd rather listen to this than Pablo but only because it's over quicker.

The score on Pitchfork clearly doesn't match the write-up at all. I disagree with the score, but I really really loved the write up. One of my favorite reviews I have read in a long time.

It's one of the few albums I've heard this year that I liked less than ye.

Honest questions for people who like the album: what positive things do you hear in it? Do you disagree that it sounds like it was written/recorded last-minute? Do you think kanye put more concern toward the deadline or the project’s overall quality? How do the lyrics affect your opinion of the record?

"The problem with ye is not that it was made by an unrepentant asshole, but that it is thoroughly, exhaustingly boring—a word I never imagined would apply to a generation’s most reliable innovator."
    - 7.1

Only Pitchfork and IGN can get away with stupid scoring like this.

    1. I hear some good ideas and there are some really cool moments where songwritting manages to shine through e.g. the second half of Ghost Town - the production is weird because it wasn’t mastered very good but I listen to a lot of lo-fi/bedroom crap so I don’t mind - it’s kind of endearing

    2. it is rushed but all my life I’ve listened to rushed, no filter or half baked shit

also stuff that is kind of designed to be listened to once

Mark Kozelek and Self Defense are two of my favorite artists and they’ve been doing the whole “let’s record all the shit we can and not think too much about it” thing for a while now and I appreciate that

also I’m into noise where there’s a lot of let’s just keep creating as much as we can

    3. doesn’t matter to me if he was worried with a deadline or quality

    4. I can listen to music that has horrible messages and still appreciate it from an artistic perspective, which doesn’t mean I agree or support it - not a popular opinion around here but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The lyrics are truly truly awful on this, I didn't hear or a single good line honestly. But from a strictly music perspective it isn't that bad - some of it is pretty catchy, at least to me - but even that said it's not particularly interesting or much better than his previous work. He mostly did all this already before, and better.

    Finally listening to this.

What the hell are the lyrics on the first few tracks? W O W. Four tracks in and holy shit this is not good.

The way the songs just kinda end, makes this sound like a sampler from iTunes, and the way certain things just kinda happen with no warning make it sound like I have two tabs open.

I still find what Kanye creates to be sonically more colorful and interesting than what most artists put out. I’m also a big TLOP defender so the slapped together unfinished quality of this (though not nearly as good as TLOP) I really don’t mind. I like that about it, but understand why others wouldn’t.

I do agree with what a lot have said, this has taken a lot of things he has already done and doesn’t break new ground. But the record does have its own feel that makes it distinct from other records in his discography.

As far as lyrics go they generally aren’t great. There are some head scratcher lines to be sure. Kanye has always been divisive and he will contradict himself multiple times sometime within the same song. I’ve always found that honest and probably why I have related to his work since College Dropout. Not much has changed tbh, the magnifying glass has gotten bigger and times have changed. Kanye and I aren’t flawed in the same ways. But we’re both flawed and I relate to that. Case in point, I’m probably blocked by most people in this very thread....

After one listen I can confirm I will likely never listen to this again.

"I miss the old Kanye" for real.

  22. The difference between the hastily assembled nature of Pablo and the hastily assembled nature of Ye is that Pablo is full of interesting, incredible moments that just aren’t strung together super well. Ye is just a hacky rush job where the best moments are undercooked at best and straight up not present at worst. On Pablo you have classic Kanye moments like that Ultralight Beam Chance verse, the beat/hook/choir on FSMH pt 1, the Bam Bam chop on Famous, that perfect synergy between Kanye, Vic Mensa, and Sia on Wolves, etc. Those moments are why I’ve always liked Kanye so much, it’s the kind of thing that appeals to me about his records. For me, the main issue with Pablo is that those great moments are strung together with some of Kanye’s worst lyrics and verses and a lot of shit that gives me pause or makes me roll my eyes, but I still listen to that album because its highs are really good.

I don’t think ye has a single memorable, envelope-pushing moment like that. It’s nothing but that bad connective tissue on Pablo. There’s no Bam Bam chop at the end of Famous that makes me put it on despite the Taylor line. It was so clearly rushed out the door to hit a self-imposed deadline, the work and vision required to make something truly memorable is just not there.

  23. Also, Meaghan Garvey is one of the best rap writers in the world right now and her review is great.
