I like the outro of the song but I think Max achieved the same thing he tried on Plea much better on Ahhhh...men tbh anyway the Boss doesn't want us to derail the thread so I'll leave that there

  6. Liked the NYT critic talking about using "the guitar riff as a loop."

    Good way of putting it.

"Matthew Healy, the lead singer of the 1975, is 29 and feeling elderly enough to venture an older-and-wiser song, “Give Yourself a Try,” as the first single from this English band’s next album, “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships.” The verses hold regrets and self-criticism, countered by the encouraging chorus. And while the video pretends that the song is guitar-bass-drums punk, the clever production uses a guitar line like a loop, giving what could have been an electropop song a constant bite. The song is put together in such a clever way. The guitar is the lead and focal point but ultimately the structure and flow all relies on the vocals

I would argue that while the guitar lead is the focal point, the song really clicks into place once you 'zone out' a bit and let the song wash over you by focusing on the other parts

Is Matty gonna play the second part live? I'd wager not given solely off this is a vocal driven song.

    Just a friendly reminder

Just listened to this on my monitor headphones for the first time and the layered construction of this song really shines. I'm also impressed with how they made a song like with with a guitar-driven approach as most bands slowly phase out guitars entirely. It's novel in the pop landscape. Maybe this'll be the album that makes me a fan instead of just enjoying a few singles.

Jon’s a really nuanced critic, not surprised he got it. If y’all don’t listen to the “NYT Popcast” podcast, give it a shot. Smart analysis and thoughtful discussion of alllll kinds of music that never gets pretentious. Here’s a somewhat recent episode that I’d recommend as intro:

OG live acoustic version was miles better than the recorded version. Way more energy. Same with the acoustic version of “Crush’d”.

"You have a good probability of being obnoxious in the "adulting" era of your 20s and you might even be aware of it, but cut yourself some damn slack. Not everyone — as Healy sings — is going to have a hard time growing a beard or getting into good whiskey (#millennialproblems), but the minutiae of growing up is a pain worth knowing and sharing." - The 1975 Has A Message For Millennials: 'Give Yourself A Try'

Haha nice. I got absolutely smashed at happy hour there on Wednesday.

Guys, this song is actually really good. I think The 1975 might have actually done it again, and by "it" I mean "made a song that I personally really like that maybe sort of tickles the edge of the mainstream barrier, but then kinda just floats back down again"

Friend who is a very casual fan of the band texted me the other night saying "this new 1975 track might be the most I've related to a song in years. 10/10 tune"

I want these guys to be the biggest band in the world
