The Roots and Blacklisted are the only good bands to ever come out of that city!

(I'm sure there are a billion more those are just the first two to come to mind)

I find em "important" because of the song Life in Drag that comes across to me as a deconstruction of hypermasculinity and it's role in abusive relationships.

I'm not sure I'm in a healthy state of mind to explain why I think The Hotelier are important at the moment (and I'm getting wicked deja vu just saying that word, as I'm pretty sure I've had a conversation about that word in relation to that band at least twice now) but I'd urge anyone unsure to browse the thread for Goodness. Many posters in there have written well-spoken, well-articulated posts explaining their attachment to and adoration of the record.

I will say, once again, that anytime I personally use the word important regarding a particular artist, I'm usually talking in personal terms. Which I'd argue is true for my relationship with like 90% of artists.

This is how I am with a very select few artists/albums, and I can never even come close to explaining how I genuinely feel because it's so deeply personal and you can't really have a true discussion about it with other people unless they've connected in the same/similar ways.

Calling bands important for an entire group of people or a scene is weird to me but specific bands or albums can be important to people and there's no real argument to take that away. You might not find Astral Weeks or Carrie and Lowell "important", but I do and that's the end of the discussion

Agreed. I think it's really only safe to call a band/album important as it relates to the evolution of music (i.e. the Beatles) -- even something as omnipresent as Beyonce's new album STILL isn't universally important. Is there a large subset of people for whom it resonates deeply? Sure, absolutely. But I can name just as many people who don't care about it and/or who like it as a pop album and not as an entire social movement.

I haven't flown since I was 15, so how much earlier than your flight are you supposed to show up at the airport? I'm nervous about the timing even tho it's not for a while lol. But I have to drive 3.5 hours to the airport and I wanna meet up with my sis and nephew for lunch/dinner beforehand

Small world: turns out that not only did I go to the same private Baptist school for elementary with two of my coworkers, but I was in the same kindergarten class with my boss's daughter. I didn't even know her at all after that, although her name sounded familiar because I had classmates who knew her.

I'm flying next month to San Francisco, but my flight is an hour and half away in Fort Lauderdale, so for me, I would leave 3 hours early to budget in traffic and TSA.

It would be a good idea to add in an extra two hours for those two reasons alone.

I think it's recommended to arrive an hour early. Could be more but it's definitely not less

What airport are you flying out of? That makes a difference. I fly almost every week out of my local smallish airport. I leave me house 50 minutes before my flight, because I know there will be like 2 people in front of me in security. So I definitely wouldn't recommend that. If it's a decent sized airport (you're in Oregon? so I'm assuming PDX?), I'd want to get there an hour and a half early. Factor in about 20-30 minutes to check your bag, and 20 minutes to get through security (both should be shorter but better to be safe).

Importance of an album in terms of general impact upon a community or musical genre obviously doesn't have to be unanimous. I think it's a fine characterization to make when looking at a piece of work with respect to a larger body of art -- some just have a larger impact than others. That doesn't mean an album should be important to any single person because of that.
