Did you speak to him about it? Perhaps he meant it harmlessly but your reaction says probably not. I can't speak to which is the better career move, confronting him or going to HR, but telling him that you personally will not tolerate it might be a good move, because HR is going to reiterate that pretty nicely for you, and then you look like the one with the balls to say it first.

yeah. he's been making comments in meetings one on one over the past 6 or 7 months.

everytime he did I would get mad and make it pretty clear that it's not ok. even though he said he was "taking off his manager's hat" and "as a friend".

yesterday he did it again. I had enough I told him yesterday flat out that it's "inappropriate", "crossing a line" and that he's my manager, even if he says "as a friend" first it doesn't mean that he's magically not my manager anymore.

he's only been my manager for 10 months, we've never been friends, never been friendly even due to these comments really. started with comments about my work/work ethic before addressing "fitness" which tells me that he's one of those "fat people = lazy" people.

either way I had enough. I needed to report it and get it on the record because I am starting to think it could affect my employment.

also since I've posted things about meetings with him in the past in our chat threads you're all on the witness list. and all of your posts will be official record.

That's fair and probably the right call.

Unless a person's fitness levels are an impediment to their job, I really don't know what a manager thinks they're accomplishing in commenting on it. I've managed before and can't fathom the use of making my employees feel unworthy or small.
