This hurts me to read!!! Don't miss seeing ETID even if you've seen them several times already - they're easily one of the best bands at that festival!

@SamLevi11 just looked at the daily lineups - some of those decisions are brutal! Ok, I'll allow you passing up ETID for JEW ;)

Listening to the 20StoriesFalling record again. Two of the influences I've put feel pretty accurate, but I think I'm gonna surprise people with what I compare The Other Side Of This to.

Hey guys! I thought I'd post my review of HURT by Hawthorne Heights. I picked this from @Bad Frequencies list of records to review. This is my first time trying to actually write a review of a record soooo...bare with me. ;-p

    LET'S DIVE ON IT!

This record is a great nostalgia record for those yearning for a taste of how 2004 Emo/Post Hardcore was done. Part of what makes this band awesome is their ability to push a song with J.T.'s high soaring vocals, while keeping it intense with aggressive screaming and powerful song arrangements. This record will leave you feeling like you need to learn every word of every song so that you can sing along! As a guitar player, one thing that I've always noticed is that They are sonically always pushing the boundary of how heavy a riff can be with clean guitar tones dipped in delay.

I really love the way they arrange these songs throughout its sonic journey. The way they toy around with the song structures that on this record will leave you hanging and begging for more. Every time I have ever listened to Hawthorne Heights, I am always able to find something something that makes each really record unique. With this EP, I am a big fan of the Lyrical content and how they have arranged in their songs to really project what the song is about on the listener. You can tell that there is a lot of heart invested in how this was intended to stand in their discography. I would say that my favorite songs on HURT are The Darkest Times, Common Crook, and Beneath The Silver Strand.

To wrap up this review I'd like to end by saying that once again, Hawthorne Heights has impressed me with this release. I feel that I should add that I have not really dug in and actually listened to them since their release in 2006 "If only You Were Lonely." However, I did check out their recent release called Bad Frequencies and it is also really good! After checking this one out, I plan to take some time and go through their entire discography. I'd also like to add that I really admire that Hawthorne Heights has decided to fight to stay relevant, and continue to reinvent what it means to be Hawthrone Heights in 2018. Not a lot of bands from the famous Post-Hardcore/Emo era have been able to push out awesome releases out like this. I think it speaks volumes for how talented they are as a band. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this release! I recommend checking out this release if your in the mood!

    Thanks guys!

Excellent job man! You’ve truly grasped how to write up a review on your first go!

I have always said HURT is one of my favorite releases from them, and I am glad to see some of your stand outs are mine as well. I agree with pretty much everything you said, from the guitar tones to JTs vocal, and the mixing in of the screamed vocals. I wish HURT had been a full LP, but we got Bad Frequencies now which is a great continuation from HURT.

No probs, it should be up soon. I've since been told what some of the songs were about, but I decided to keep my original thoughts in the review to keep it as "real" as possible. I definitely got a new spin on some of the songs since I found out though. It's a good album, I'll say that much already!

    Mastersystem
    Dance Music
    2018

Prior to this session, I had never heard of the band Mastersystem. @Nate_Johnson assigned the album to me last Thursday (5/10) and I did a little background research on them since I was completely unfamiliar with them. I discovered that they are a British alternative rock supergroup composed of the following lineup: Scott Hutchison (best known for his role in Frightened Rabbit) on guitar and vocals, Grant Hutchison (best known for his role in Frightened Rabbit) on drums, Justin Lockey (best known for his role in Editors) on guitar, and James Lockey (best known for his role in Minor Victories) on bass. This album is Mastersystem's debut album and sadly their final album. Tragically, Scott Hutchison was found dead on Friday (5/11) after being missing for several days. In case you missed it, here's the link to the Chorus news story: Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit Passes Away

I will say right off the bat that while I had heard of Frightened Rabbit I have never listened to any of their music. In light of the recent tragedy and also based on the fact that I really loved this album, I'm definitely going to check out their catalog.

Dance Music begins with the song Proper Home which is a great opening track and and a very solid start to the album. It's loud alternative rock with some really nice guitar work. It reminds me a lot of Manchester Orchestra, which is a great thing! The next track Notes On A Life Not Quite Living is another awesome sounding song and this song has the drums more at the forefront. I really enjoyed this song as well. The Enlightenment follows and is one of the shortest songs (it actually may be the shortest) on the album at just under three minutes long. It's another really awesome song and it's a bit faster paced than the first two tracks. At this point, the album is definitely 3/3 for me and I was loving every second of it.

The next two songs, Teething and Peaks & Troughs & Graves, are probably my two least favorite songs on the record, but they are still great - that's a testament as to how good this album is. Teething is over 5 minutes long and it's a slow burn for roughly the first 3:45 of it. It does have a great payoff though. Again, this is not a bad song - this is probably more of a reflection on my impatience! Peaks & Troughs & Graves is a good song, but it didn't really stand out much to me from a musical standpoint.

Old Team and Must Try Harder are the next two songs and they are both awesome, loud, and energetic. Seriously - these guys are great at what they do. The musicianship is stellar and I really love the vocals.

A Waste Of Daylight is probably the "heaviest" song on the album as the vocals at times are delivered in more of a yell/scream than on other parts of the album. This is another standout track to me in an album full of standout tracks. Bird Is Bored Of Flying is the ninth and final track on this album and it's the longest song at over six minutes in length. It's a great song to close this album on.

I really enjoyed this album from a lyrical standpoint. It's nearly impossible to not view the lyrics differently in light of the recent tragedy. I'm sure if I had heard this album a month ago I would have still loved it, but I wouldn't have examined the lyrics quite as deeply. Here are some of my favorite lyrics on the album:

One last time, I might get it right (Old Team)

In the race to lose, I'm winning (A Waste Of Daylight)

And we all want fire until it burns, we all want more until it starts to hurt (Bird Is Bored Of Flying)

All in all, this is an album that should be heard by all fans of alternative rock. I think it would absolutely appeal to fans of Manchester Orchestra and most likely fans of Frightened Rabbit (although I can't say that with certainty at this point).

I'd urge everyone to check out this album - it's definitely one of my favorite releases from this year so far. My favorite tracks were Proper Home, Notes On A Life Not Quite Lived, The Enlightenment, Old Team, Must Try Harder, A Waste Of Daylight, and Bird Is Bored Of Flying. That's 7 of the 9 tracks on the album, and as I've stated above, the 2 songs that were my least favorite were still good songs and I could see them being fan favorites. The album is only 9 tracks and 35 minutes long, so just go listen to it front-to-back!

I'm looking forward to spending more time with this album and I'm sure that I'll uncover plenty more on repeated listens. Really good recommendation @Nate_Johnson !

I am glad you enjoyed it. I like how the overall album is sort of drenched in the alternative grunge scene of the 90's. It is very sad to lose Scott and there is a good possibility we will never see another Frightened Rabbit or Mastersystem album again.

I suppose that I shouldn't have said that Dance Music is Mastersystem's last album. I guess I just kind of assumed that but they may have had some unreleased material that will eventually see the light of day
